In following the process of consultation with residents this book explores the levels of miscommunication across social divides, and the differing narratives of change produced by residents and professionals. Residents' narratives display an important interplay between constitution of identity, community, sense of security, attribution of blame and ascription of responsibility for dealing with local problems explored in this book through detailed analysis of case studies.

In the final section of the book the author puts forward an alternative vision for participatory urban governance, bringing together notions of justice, rights, inclusion and sustainability.

Dr Rukhsana Ahmed is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa. She holds Masters Degrees in International Relations (University of Dhaka); International Development Studies; and Communication Studies, and a PhD in Health Communication (Ohio University). Her research embraces the cross-disciplinary nature of the study of communication with a specific focus on health care. She has published journal articles and book chapters focused on the intersection of health, communication, and culture. Dr Benjamin R. Bates is currently an Associate Professor and Director for Graduate Studies in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University. Dr Bates earned his PhD at the University of Georgia. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and made presentations to learned societies at the intersection of health, communication, and media. He is past chair of the health communication interest group of the Eastern Communication Association.

It reads like a family scrapbook

They were born, they grew up. Their father made some nice deals on exercise equipment. They started to exercise in eighth grade, as a family tradition -- they played sports and then football, they got hurt. They had fun.

Although there are some interesting tidbits scattered throughout this book -- and I wish my mother had put a freezer full of food stocked for me and Sis when we were in the middle of our baseball practice/growth spurt years -- I found the book to be pleasantly anecdotal, but not inspirational. It's nice to know "how they did it" but it doesn't give much of a message other than -- this is a nice, solid family -- this is how they lived, grew up, played sports.

I bought this for my nephews birthday and he loved it. But it is definitely a book for children and not adults. I read a quote attributed to Wes Welker where he joked that he though it was written in crayon but it does seem like a rush job with not much time or effort put into it.

More of a Children's Book

I received this book from the Vine program and more than likely I would never have purchased the book. It seems more targeted fro children to read. The print though is large, the wording not that difficult and a fast and easy book to read in a short time. This is somewhat the "all American" story of a family that loved sports, that worked hard and overcame setbacks as they worked toward their goals. The book will give you a picture of how the family was raining the boys, how the family got by of a few hundred dollars a week for food when everyone was at home.

This is just a nice little personal book that gives the reader the "rest of the story" and is light and of little real substance. It is just a little fun reading away from those books that contains lot of drama and intrigue,. You won't find that in this book.. This book is not a breaking story worthy of a news clip, but rather a lazy , short, little story about one's family , their trials and tribulations. Read it only if you have nothing else to do for the moment.

Fascinating set of therapeutic How-To's for interventions

Basically this is a set of techniques for diagnosing and intervening with families. The 56 techniques include such classics as the genogram, use of dreams, reframing, and paradox. Each technique is presented with enough detail that you can use it immediately. Names of techniques include: "Pretending to have the symptom," "Contaminating the suicidal Fantasy," and "Sculpting."
Each procedure is such an easy read that I have made this book part of my bathroom accessories. I wouldn't part with it.

Great Addition to Family Counseling Data

Being a pastor in times likes these is very different from 30 years ago. Even though families experience some of the same problems as that period, the method and applications of resolving these issues are very important to make sure these families have all the data at their disposal for therapy and healing. It is a great addition and I recommend this book for family therapy counseling,
