A War Zone of the Soul
Dr. W. Lee Warren’s life as a neurosurgeon in a trauma center began to unravel long before he shipped off to serve the Air Force in Iraq in 2004. When he traded a comfortable if demanding practice in San Antonio, Texas, for a ride on a C-130 into the combat zone, he was already reeling from months of personal struggle.
At the 332nd Air Force Theater Hospital at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, Warren realized his experience with trauma was just beginning. In his 120 days in a tent hospital, he was trained in a different specialty—surviving over a hundred mortar attacks and trying desperately to repair the damages of a war that raged around every detail of every day. No place was safe, and the constant barrage wore down every possible defense, physical or psychological.
One day, clad only in a T-shirt, gym shorts, and running shoes, Warren was caught in the open while round after round of mortars shook the earth and shattered the air with their explosions, stripping him of everything he had been trying so desperately to hold on to.
Warren’s story is an example of how a person can go from a place of total loss to one of strength, courage, and victory. Whether you are in the midst of your own crisis of faith, failed relationship, financial struggle, or illness, you will be inspired to remember that how you respond determines whether you survive—spiritually, emotionally, and sometimes physically.

About the Author
W. Lee Warren, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and patented inventor. He lives in Auburn, Alabama, with his wife and business partner, Lisa Warren, and their children. Dr. Warren has a BS in Biochemistry from Oklahoma Christian University and an MD from the University of Oklahoma. He practices minimally invasive brain and spinal surgery, develops new technologies with his wife through their company, Warren Innovation, and is an affiliate professor of biomedical sciences at Auburn University. In his spare time, he plays guitar, writes songs, and recently completed his first novel, Kill Switch.

Heroic and Heartbreaking

In No Place to Hide: A Brain Surgeon’s Long Journey Home from the Iraq War, W. Lee Warren chronicles his four months in Iraq as he and his team of doctors attempt to save lives while under fire themselves. Meanwhile, on the home front, his marriage is falling apart. In the process of ministering to the broken and the bleeding, Warren is forced to face his own weaknesses and seek a deeper relationship with God. Alone during a mortar attack, Warren is compelled to make a decision that changes his life.
No Place to Hide is not a book for the faint-hearted or the squeamish, as it is a gripping account of war and the horror it inflicts on humanity. It is a stark reminder of the frailty of life and the unbelievable lengths to which doctors go to save soldier and terrorist alike. Evil and compassion are juxtaposed on every page, as well as the constant struggle for survival. This account is both heart-warming and heart-rending as one witnesses the incredible physical, psychological, and emotional toll the conflict takes on soldier and civilian. The acts of kindness and concern that American soldiers showed for each other and the people they were to protect, as well as those they were fighting, was astounding. The personal stories of Rose, Maria, and Sergeant Statzer are unforgettable.
I understand the graphic nature of war in a way I haven’t before. One could never be the same after witnessing such things. That said, the narrative was too self-focused at times, which is distracting. However, No Place to Hide gave me pride in my country because of the incredible courage and compassion displayed by the American military to fellow soldiers and sworn enemies. I would like to thank Major Warren for his story, his service, and his sacrifice in saving so many lives.

Gripping!

I could not put it down! Dr. Warren courageously shares from his heart and personal experiences from the Iraq War. The reader is given a vivid picture of the harsh realities that war brings, and the valiant sacrifice that so many service-men give for our every-day freedoms. Dr. Warren's testimony of faith in the midst of struggle, difficulty and heartache is an inspiration to us all. This book is a testimony to God's greatness - He will always use our pain for a His greater good when we turn our lives over to Him. I highly recommend reading "No Place To Hide."

Challenge Yourself to Grow and Live Deeply

No Place to Hide is three books hidden in one. It's a book about a military surgeon and how he dealt with his time in Iraq. It's a book about a man of faith struggling with the questions anyone would in circumstances like his. Thirdly, it's a book that challenges you to walk through W. Lee Warren's life as he's laid it out, but to imagine your choices, your decisions, and then apply all this to your own life. This isn't an easy read. It's a door thrown wide open. Be brave and you'll see the rewards.
