Exciting, scary and hopeful all at the same time!

I have read most, if not all of Tim LaHaye's novels. It's difficult to describe his novels in standard terms as they are written as fiction, but with a basis in scripture, which I believe to be the inerrant Word of God. Therefore, I know the ultimate outcome of his novels, but his writing is still thrilling and suspenseful. I usually read one if his books in a couple of days, as it is difficult to put it down.

Another good read!!

Terrific read as far as it goes but ends in the middle of the Tribulation. Will there be more books to continue the series in the future? All four of these books are real 'page turners'. I've enjoyed all of them but feel like I've been left 'up in the air' if this is the last one. I would recommend all four books but be sure to read them in order. Reading them out of order would be confusing I would think.

Edge of your seat reading

I should have known that this wouldn't be the end of the series, but we know the end of the story. It was hard to stop on any given page, and I was thankfully on vacation. Mark of Evil is an exciting account of what happens as the world nears the half-way point of the tribulation. The descriptions of events are consistently fast-paced. If you liked the first books, you'll be glad to read this one.

Unquenchable is

The transparency of Carol and Gene Kent is the catalyst that will allow this book to be used in countless ways in the lives of God's people. You don't have to be going through the same heartbreaking trial to experience the same faith-building principles present in this book.

The chapter where Carol speaks about the embers - the hot, enduring coals deep in our core - is the chapter that arrested my thoughts and enlarged my thinking on this thing called life. Sometimes we confuse faith with feelings, and I now know it's okay to experience the ebb and flow of life without fear of the low spots dousing the embers of my faith.

This book will change your life. Here are faith-building stories that we all will be able to identify with on one level or another, and be given the renewed hope that comes with a personal relationship with the Creator of this world - Jesus Christ.

I definitely plan on passing this one out to my friends and family.

This is the perfect book for anyone who is wants a fresh infusion of red-hot faith in their life!

Not only does Carol does an excellent job of unpacking God’s Word, she weaves in her personal journey with heart-touching transparency and authenticity — even sharing excerpts from her husband’s journal. Wow.

The Kent’s open their hearts and lives like few I’ve known, and allowed God to use their joys and hardships for His purposes.

Carol also weaves powerful stories of tested faith throughout the book. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll pump your fist in awe of God. It’s that good!

My sense is as you read Unquenchable, you’ll create a list of others you know who would also be blessed and impacted by Carol’s journey of disappointment, despair, and hope in the midst of hardship. You’ll want to read it for yourself first, and then pass it along!

I got this book and read it in one sitting and turned around and read it again.
Mrs. Kent shares wonderful faith building stories in this book.

At first glance, the storyline of Thomas Dyja's Play for a Kingdom story sounds corny: a Union company from Brooklyn encounters an Alabama company while on picket duty after the Battle of the Wilderness (May, 1864) and proceeds to challenge them to a series of baseball games before all hell breaks loose in Spottsylvania. The first-time novelist, however, has surprises up his sleeve, and the vividly described sporting matches set up a series of betrayals and double crosses which test the camaraderie of the Union soldiers, calling their commitment to the war effort into question.

Dyja has a gifted understanding of the powerlessness one faces in combat. War in this novel is not tragic merely because it kills and maims good men; it is dispiriting because it robs them of their identities. He handles the multiple points of view of his Brooklyn protagonists superbly, differentiating them by class, social standing, and ethnicity, and aptly shows how the war frays their senses of themselves. Commanders become followers, Irish racists hide amongst black gravediggers, and staunch abolitionists measure their belief in liberty against their gut instincts concerning the corruptibility of human nature. If the sectional crisis of the first half of the 19th century was settled on the fields of battle, the class struggle of the second half was forged in the streets of Brooklyn--making Dyja's company all the more fascinating for the way they illustrate the transition. Although the novel's climax abandons historical materialism for genre convention, the tense mixture of espionage, betrayal, and vivid battle scenes in Play for a Kingdom should please discriminating fans of Civil War fiction. --John M. As this first novel opens, the 20 remaining men of Company L, 14th Brooklyn regiment, have only 18 days remaining in their three-year enlistments. As they are pulling out, they discover a field, unscathed by war, on which they begin to play baseball. Suddenly, a group of Confederate soldiers emerges from the surrounding woods, holding rifles but declaring a truce. And so the Union and Confederate soldiers who have met before and who will meet again on Civil War battlefields begin a series of baseball games. Dyja effectively juxtaposes the horror and chaos of war with the familiar routine of the game. He explores the theme of war and games as natural activities of man, as battles of pride and place, and as testing grounds of moral and physical honor. Dyja writes that "a ball field was a world within the world," and so too a baseball game is a world within a war. An engrossing story, told within the context of actual events. Recommended for most libraries.

18th Century historical fiction is becoming a popular genre, but this one breaks the mold. A description cannot do it justice. It suffices to say that Dyja interweaves the Civil War, espionage, and baseball in a completely believable and engrossing way. It is moving, suspenseful and exciting. A great story!

Baseball, War, and Some Intriguing Characters

First of all, why did I read this book? Well, I came across this book one evening while browsing my local library. I was immediately intrigued by this book that combines two of my favorite subjects: baseball and the civil war.
The basic premise: a company of Union soldiers from Brookline, with less than three weeks to go in their active duty, struggle with the hellish reality of war, the personality conflicts with one another, and the unavoidable need to complete a covert five-game series of baseball games with a group of Rebels.
The characters in this book are complex and well thought out. The company is a collection of very different men at odds with each other and the cause they are fighting for. The butcher's son, the Irish ruffian, the aloof lawyer, the Hungarian immigrant must all come together to survive the final days of their duty.
What I liked most about this book is the evolving attitudes of most of the characters. After the company shares a couple of games of baseball with their Rebel enemies, a few of the men begin to realize that the Southerners are much like them. I particularly liked the situation the Irishman found himself in when a company of black men (he despises the Africans) comes to his rescue when he is trying to desert his own company.
If I have one complaint about the book, it is that the story and the characters are fictional. Knowing that this story was not based on a real account, diminished the experience for me. That said, I still highly recommend this book. The characters are very intriguing, the accounts of the baseball games are fun, and the depiction of the battle scenes are vivid and intense.

Thomas Dyja writes an entertaining novel about humans tested under the strain of war--all revealed through baseball games...And the first two reviewers can think of nothing but complaints over the dust-jacket photograph; or the fact that the 14th Brooklyn had no Company L??? The book details the process of the creative reorganization of the self during adolescence and explores the changes that take place in the adolescent's relationships with peers, parents, and others in the adult world. The author also tracks the interplay of intrapsychic and interpersonal boundary development and shows how this interplay manifests itself in relationships and evolves from early through late adolescence. The Gestalt model of therapy allows the clinician to make sense of the confusion of the adolescent world and map out the multiple possibilities of clinical interventions.

About the Author
Mark McConville is a psychotherapist in private practice in Cleveland, Ohio, specializing in adolescent and family psychotherapy.  He is on the faculty of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland.  In addition, he serves as clinical consultant for the Shaker Heights Youth Center and is affiliated consultant for Hathaway Brown School and University School, both in the greater Cleveland area.

An excellent, indispensable text for practitioners

McConville views adolescence not simply as a time of 'storm and stress' for the young person, but as a process of development which influences the adolescent and his/her whole environment. The theme of development and therapy with this age group is, for the author, CONTACT. He offers a rich, engaging and experience-near description of how the adolescent's capacity for intrapsychic and interpersonal contact develops - and at the same time, how the environment's capacity to contact the adolescent also develops. This book is so helpful and instructive in teaching the adolescent therapist about the art of making meaningful contact with the young people we meet.
McConville's writing vividly captures the heart of adolescent process - this is the reason it is the core text for my students in a post-graduate training in adolescent psychotherapy.
If you work with adolescents, this one is a must!

Homeschooling has been a wonderful journey for my family

Homeschooling has been a wonderful journey for my family. One of my favorite things about the journey is having a more intimate connection with each of my kids as they discover who they are. We have also enjoyed many many hours of nature study and exploration.

Now that the homeschooling journey is coming to a close, new exciting adventures are before us. But that doesn't mean I will let those connections go. And the hours of nature study and exploration will give way to maybe an afternoon here or there, but I'll still get us out there. Especially with my youngest, my math science nature girl.

Could be better with more theology and less political agenda

While this book contains many fun projects, tips, and recipes and my daughter said she enjoyed it, I was slightly disappointed about a few aspects of Nature Girl. Theologically speaking, there just was not much there. While each chapter contained a verse from scripture and occasionally mentioned our relationship with God’s creation, it was a very small part of the book and could easily be missed. In addition, a clear political agenda is found in a few places. For example, the authors begins Chapter Three by discussing how the manufacturing of nuclear weapons in Rocky Flat, Colorado contaminated much of the area. They give the impression that the event was no big deal and that animals are now thriving in the area. Although they mention that “people are still not allowed there,” they also state that “God made the world able to heal itself” (49). While I agree with the healing ability of God’s creation, the tone here downplays man’s ability to damage and distort creation. A similar problem is found at the beginning of Chapter Five. Here the authors downplay the damage done by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 by claiming that bacteria in the ocean consumed the vast majority of it while the rest was cleaned by human effort (76). While it is true that bacteria helped some, there was far too much oil spilt by the deepwater well for any natural clean-up method to work. In fact, dead animals are still washing up on the Gulf shores covered in oil and plant life is still dying off in many areas. Once again the authors downplay man’s ability to destroy the earth. There are a few other places where a political agenda can be found, but the two above mentioned are the most egregious. Still, the authors do mention the harmful side-effects of chemicals and the burning of fossil fuels. I cannot recommend this book with confidence and must keep looking for a good work that offers a proper Christian view towards the environment.

for a "girly" nature girl...

My 8 year old daughter is, what I would call, a "Nature Girl." She loves the outdoors, especially bugs. She loves to climb trees and scramble up rocky hillsides. When I saw the description for this book Nature Girl by Karen Whiting and Rebecca White I thought this might be a great way to get my daughter into reading one of her first devotional books.

I decided, upon receipt of the book, to give it a read-ahead to see what my daughter would be reading. The first chapter is called Be You and Be Beautiful. The first paragraph says, "So...you might think that "nature girl" is known for dirty fingernails and sweaty bandana's --she could never be the glam girl who's hanging out to the cosmetic's counter, right? Not necessarily so!" The book then launches into the importance of inner beauty, beauty starts from within, really beauty is showing kindness... and at this point it is refreshing. I like the idea of a book that is going to tell my daughter that she is lovely because she is a child of God. Then, I turned the page. "Spa-day Spectacular" it reads. "Plan a fun at-home spa day for you and your friends...." While my 8 year old is a "dirty fingernails" Nature Girl she does enjoy some girly things...but she would roll her eyes at a Spa Party. There is a large section on how to have a good beauty routine. Then, there it is. 2 small paragraphs that talk about Esther. Such a tiny little section of "God's Creation" in there.

I found this book to a cute idea. The premise is that as you read through the chapters you are discovering how to care for God's creations. But, a devotional type book it is not. This would be fun for a much older girl...maybe 12+. It gets into food, animals, recycling and more. It has fun little quizzes and a section that discusses careers in each chapter. Overall it might be a good book for a "girly nature lover!" I received this book free of charge from Book Look in exchange for an honest review.

A pearl of theory

The more I read this book, the more I appreciate the accomplishments of the middle-1980's two-period modelers. The body of theory coming out of that era was far from perfect and it had no immediate quantitative use. Nevertheless, those of us who wish to continue the development and application of dynamic oligopoly theory would do well to study Fudenberg and Tirole's monograph.

if the other review hadn't been so glowing.

i ordered this book after reading the first page--i thought any writer who could make me laugh within the first three paragraphs would be worth reading. i was wrong.

some readers may enjoy her style--that's a matter of taste. i found it annoying--choppy, repetitive (although a good editor could have helped there), and very slow to develop. the dialogue is stiff (and i don't mean the dialect--i'm scottish, i've been to scotland, i understand the dialect), the descriptions graceless, and the character development minimal.

if you can get past her style, her explanation of the events is interesting. but it took a lot of effort for me to get past the first quarter of the book.

In recent years increasing attention has been paid to issues of social exclusion and the problematic transition from youthful dependence to adult independence. Often this has had severe consequences, ranging from under achievement and disruptive behaviour in school, through the misuse of alcohol and drugs, to serious or persistent offending. Seeking to address these issues has become a major focus of public policy and a variety of forms of intervention with disaffected youth have been set up.

One of the most talked about forms of intervention with disaffected youth has been 'mentoring'. This book, based on a large-scale research study, examines the lives of a large group of 'disaffected' young people, and considers the impact that involvement in a mentoring programme had on them. In doing so it fills a large gap, providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of mentoring programmes, providing at the same time a vivid insight into the nature of such disaffection, the realities of contemporary social exclusion among young people and the experience and outcome of mentoring.

Tim Newburn is Professor of Criminology and Director of the Mannheim Centre, London School of Economics, former President of the British Society of Criminology and an experienced and prolific author.

Michael Shiner is a Senior Research Fellow in the Mannheim Centre for Criminology at the London School of Economics.

Tara Young is a Senior Research Fellow in the  Faculty of Applied Social Sciences, London Metropolitan University.
