About the Author
Sonya Rhodes, PhD, received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Columbia University and has been a practicing psychotherapist in New York City for over thirty years. She has served on the faculty of New York Medical College, Columbia University, and the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, one of the largest mental health clinics in the world, and is the coauthor of several books, including Second Honeymoon: A Pioneering Guide for Reviving the Mid-Life Marriage. She lives in New York City with her husband.
Susan Schneider is an award-winning former editor, columnist, and writer for numerous magazines, including Mademoiselle, Modern Bride, and Sesame Street Parents. She is the author of the novel The Wedding Writer and coauthor of the nonfiction book Second Honeymoon (with Sonya Rhodes). She lives in New York City.

Slightly disappointed

I was really excited to get this book. I fit the profile perfectly - "Just your typical strong, overachieving woman with boy problems" as the author says. And in that way, the book fit the bill. It accurately described many of the challenges I've faced in relationships, it encouraged me to own my power and strength (yay!) and it was easy to relate to the content.
But, disappointingly, I found it to be less of a book with logical advice about how to be successful in relationships and more a pitch for the author's particular way of thinking, which is that strong alpha women should always pair up with Beta men. There is no other alternative in the book. Alpha/alpha relationships are outwardly dismissed with little more than an unsubstantiated sentence claiming that they most frequently end in divorce. The rest of the book is a sales pitch for the supportive partnership of Betas along with instructions for finding, accepting, building a relationship with and ultimately marrying your Beta. So, if you're single or already attached to a Beta, this is a nice handbook articulating that scenario. But if you're struggling in an alpha/alpha relationship this book has absolutely no insights at all. Nor does it talk much about building skills that would allow us Alpha ladies greater flexibility and delicacy in relationships. I personally was looking for some development tips that would help me tread a little more lightly and establish closer, more successful partnerships with partners all across the alpha/beta spectrum. But I found no such insights here.

Makes Sense to a 20Something

Even if you (like me) are wary of nonfiction about dating/relationships, Dr. Sonya Rhodes really seems to be on to something with "The Alpha Woman Meets Her Match." Her message to women is, essentially, that it's wrong to settle for a partner that doesn't complement your personality and your lifestyle. No one should should rush to couple up for the fear of it becoming "too late" to find the right person. Dr. Rhodes has created an evaluative quiz that measures up the ratio of "alpha" (dominant, assertive) and "beta" (more submissive and nurturing) qualities in your personality, and ventures that understanding those qualities is essential to a fulfilling relationship that is functional, loving, (and yes, sexual). Dr. Rhodes also dismisses the negativity surrounding the idea of an "Alpha Woman." Possessing Alpha traits does not make you less feminine or desirable, and vice-versa.
To any 20-something like myself, the idea that focusing on your career and your own life while you're young instead of feeling pressured to settle down "before all the good ones are gone" (ahem, Susan Patton) is very refreshing. Dr. Rhodes, a PhD and "Alpha Woman" herself, it seems, is quite confident that contrary to that, the most successful life partnerships are formed later in life. You don't lose out when you're 30, 40, or 50-- in fact, being more self-aware and confident, you're more likely to find the person who is truly right for you.
The anecdotes from Dr. Rhodes' experience as a marital counselor are informative and often very entertaining....and her message to "Alpha Woman" to not compromise themselves for anyone is inspiring. A great read.

So refreshing!

I had come across the author on Huffington Post because there's been so much coverage recently about ambitious women and the changing dynamic in relationships that has resulted from the dynamic in the workplace. Everyone loves to talk about how it's hard for "strong" women to find a man, and we all wonder why and pose theories, but what I LOVE about this book is that it doesn't tell us NOT to be who we ARE. Instead of just whining, as some other recent books on the topic of powerful women in today's dating scene have done, this book actually offers real insight and advice about how to navigate romance when you're used to being in charge in the office. I find it liberating to strip "alpha" and "beta" of their gender cliches. Why should anyone consider me less feminine for being strong-willed? I think the change in our cultural mentality will take time, but it's a change that's only natural. How we work and function within relationships has nothing to do with our gender, it's personality, and for every personality there is a complimentary personality that makes a good relationship an actual possibility! Now I just need to meet the perfect guy, but this book taught me a lot about how to look for him, and who I should avoid...! Recommend it very much.
