Awful!

I love Sands books - been reading them for years. What's with this one? It was dark, had little romance, and was totally depressing! I expected a fun, light vampire romance and got totally grossed out. (Really? Did she need to describe the blood and gore so explicitly?) The heroine seemed stupid and unaware, the hero had no great substance either.
Lynsay Sands needs to take her time (the book seemed rushed at the end - probably her publisher was pushing for it) and create another with more fun. I don't want to read a book that seems like "True Blood." Get back to the original formula!

Enjoyable read but with a heavy tone - 3.5 stars

Basha Argeneau has lived her entire long life on the run from her family who will kill her if they find her. She's spent the last century working as a fortune teller in carnivals, going by the name Madame Divine.
Until recently, her Uncle Lucian thought she was dead, but hearing that she's alive has had people out looking for her. Marcus Notte finds a woman matching her description and is surprised to discover she's his life mate. But is she Basha, and if so, what should he do about it? Divine soon realizes that "Marco" is one of Lucian's spies and needs to run again.
The book is loaded with people from past books. To me, that type of thing is always a treat. I really liked Divine and Marcus and the carnival atmosphere. The story is interesting and the reveal of her past is well done. But this story has a much heavier tone that often overshadows a great deal, including the humor and their relationship; and I felt like I was missing a lot because of it. There is some humor, but the best of it is centered in just a couple of places instead of spread throughout the book.
If it hadn't been for the characters from past books--as well as her last name--I'm not sure I'd even recognize this as being part of the Argeneau series. Certainly an enjoyable read, but not as humor-ridden as I've come to expect from this author.
On the other hand, those not familiar with the series will find enough here to enjoy that they'd probably want to give the prior books a try.

Missed the Expected Humor

Born during the time of pharaohs Basha Argeneau’s life for a very short time was filled with love and laughter, but then at the age of 10 years she was kidnapped and for years, life was filled with abominations of torture, pain and misery. As a young woman Basha escaped and has been on the run for millenniums, afraid for her life and keeping to herself. Now she was known as Madame Divine - a fortune telling carnival act that afforded her some semblance of family as well as the ability to move around when the time came to switch lives and hide her youthful appearance.
When word of Basha reaches Lucien Argeneau, he sends Marcus Notte out to discover if Basha is still alive and if she’s become a rogue vampire. With no real photograph or way of identifying Basha, Marcus needs to tread carefully on the very seductive little vamp he finds at the carnival. Unfortunately, Marcus, who is also a very old vampire can’t seem to read Madame Divine to discover her secrets and he’s not quite sure why!
*** As the 20th book in Sands’ Argeneau series, I found VAMPIRE MOST WANTED to be a whole lot darker than anything I’ve read before in the series. For one thing, other than one amazing episode with a “mop”, there wasn’t as much humor that I’ve come to expect in this series. This in itself was quite different from most all of the other books by Sands which I’ve read, be they historical or part of the Argeneau series. VAMPIRE MOST WANTED was really a bit more serious both in nature and in content.
The reason Divine/Basha was so afraid of being found by her Uncle (Lucien Argeneau) was based upon the fact that she herself had been lied to for millenniums. Basha actually believed and feared that Lucien would kill her because when she’d been raped all those years ago she failed to kill herself as most of the aristocrats would do. That along with a lot of other mis-information and garbage she was being fed over the years by her supposed rescuer Abbadon, whom Basha quickly came to avoid whenever she could, wasn’t aware it was all lies.
In so far as the romance between Basha and Marcus - it just wasn’t played up as much as in previous volumes that always had romantic involvements in them. The reason hear was probably because of the nature of Basha’s issues of aloneness, trust, and keeping to herself. Basha knew that Marcus was a spy and was prepared to run the first chance she could. Unfortunately, the little spark of attraction which started to grow between them and roadblocks, like head bashing and fires caused by outsiders squashed a lot of her plans.
Bottom line: Naturally, I liked this story because I love the Argeneau series, however the lack of humor was missed. Nevertheless, I am still going to be anxious for the next book in this fabulous series.
