...But sometimes it's hard...

The above is the title of a subsection in eleven of this book's thirteen chapters, four of which deal with our identity as Christians and seven which deal with the way we live.

The author's thesis is that Christianity is more about being than it is about doing. As Christians we have new identities as part of a family, missionary, servant and disciple. He then goes into seven rhythms which illustrate how we live in our new identity. There are two useful appendices at book's end going deeper and several pages of notes most of which are Bible references.

Basically, this is a motivating book aimed at those who have accepted Christ but have not yet attained the plateau of "being" which he talks about. He uses many experiences that are his own and also ones of people he's ministered to in illustrating what he says about identity and the rhythms of living. He speaks in practical and easily understood terms and always backed by Biblical verses.

The "But sometimes it's hard" subsection in each chapter gets down to the basics and is the most helpful part of each chapter.

Reading this book will help you grow as a Christian and is highly recommended.

No more "doing to be".

I'll cut to the chase to save your time - this book is fantastic. You'll love it! Well, I should qualify that first. If you are looking to read about a ton of different things Christians should do to be better Christians, then skip this book. If you are looking to read a deep theological treaty on the Christian life without any actual examples of how that might look in everyday life, then you should skip this book. If you need to be convinced that making disciples in everyday life is only the work of the very special, super-Christians, then you should skip this book.

However, if you, like me, are kind of tired of reading books that load you up with theory or bog you down with "to dos", then you should buy this book immediately. If you long to re-experience the joy of your salvation so you are freed up to show others what the Father is like, then buy this book.

While so many books have been written about how a Christian should live, Kalinowski takes a refreshingly Biblical perspective. He proposes that how a Christian gets to live is a direct result of who they are because of what Christ has done. Maybe you should re-read that sentence to discover the freedom it hold for you.

Kalinowski consistently reminds his reader to replace the "your doing determines your be-ing" lie with the gospel reality that your being (in Christ) determines your doing. We don't have to live as missionaries, we get to!

With story after story, the author transforms this gospel reality of "our being shaping our doing" from theory into vivid, living examples. You'll find yourself so wrapped up in the stories and celebrating what God has done, is doing and promises to do, that you may just start believing that this reality is true for you too.

So read this book to discover, or be reminded again, of the Father's extravagant love for you and his ever-present invitation to enter into his joy right now, right where you are. You will be glad you did!

Practical, inspirational and a fun read!

Transformed: A New Way of Being Christian paints a wonderfully down-to-earth picture of how to be a disciple whose identity in Christ is solid and secure—thereby freeing us up to serve Him out of grace, not out of guilt.

As the author memorably puts it:
“If God has a refrigerator, your picture is on it!”

The book has two main strands. The first half digs into identity, using the framework of 4 words that reflect the new identity that Jesus gives to His disciples, lived out in the context of a Jesus-centered community.

- Family: A group of people with whom we walk through all of life. The relational glue is that we are children of our heavenly Father (even if some are estranged from Dad right now).
- Missionaries: God is on a rescue mission to restore His family and His creation, and so as His children we get to share in the family business!
- Servants: We follow a servant leader, and in His name serve “anyone God brings into our lives with whatever needs doing, whenever it is needed, and wherever it leads us.”
- Disciples: As apprentices of Jesus, we take responsibility for becoming more like Jesus, and help others do the same.

“If a person lives as a disciple, walking in Jesus’ ways, then they will come to know the truth that sets them free!”

The second half of the book takes us further into practical implications, by sharing 6 daily rhythms of discipleship.

- Story-formed: As we are shaped by God’s story in the Bible, so we will reflect that as we interact with the stories of others. This is a central part of missional community life for Soma Communities.
- Listen: Learning to listen to God’s voice in the Bible and in our life today is a central discipline for a disciple, as that is how we will know what Jesus is saying to us and thus what He would like us to do.
- Eat: By sharing in meals with both believers and unbelievers, we share in community and create a context for the Gospel to be demonstrated and shared.
- Bless: Whether through words, deeds or gifts, we are blessed to be a blessing.
- Celebrate: We should be the people who bring the party in our places of mission – after all, as followers of Jesus, we should be filled with reasons to celebrate and display God’s goodness!
- Re-Create: Taking time to rest, have fun and restore in ways that renew us and those around us.

One of the things that I love about this book is that it is chock full of stories, some of which make you go ‘Wow!’ out loud! This reflects the reality that the content here has been birthed out of the local church, in particular Soma Communities (a church-planting church, in Tacoma WA), with all the ups and downs that entails.

As a community they have worked hard at living out the new identity that Christ gives to us, through everyday rhythms of life. Yet this is not about forming Christian gatherings that are withdrawn from the world. Rather, this book is fully centered on equipping and encouraging people to be out in their neighborhoods and workplaces and places of mission, living out what it means to follow Jesus.

This book is a very practical, inspiring and easy read. It is not a program, but it will stir you to think more afresh about how you can be more intentional about growing as a disciple who is making disicples. You will come away with some fresh ideas and challenge for you and your community to live out.

Hopefully that has not effected my review—for many years I’ve known and trusted Caesar and his ministry, and think that he has done a great job of transferring a chunk of that into print. Gynaecologist William Howell Masters and psychologist Virginia Eshelman Johnson pioneered research into the nature of human sexual response and the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders and dysfunctions from 1957 until the 1990s. This book examines their influential scientific sex research and its groundbreaking implications for sex therapy and the study of human sexuality.

The book illuminates how Masters and Johnson have constructed their apparently scientific ideas about sexual function and dysfunction with reference to dominant Western discourses about sexuality. In addition, the book will explore some of the wider theoretical, conceptual and historical issues relating to the study of human sexuality. These will include a critical evaluation of conventional accounts of the history of the sociology of sex, particularly in the United States, major theoretical frameworks used in the study and understanding of human sexuality, and some of the key concepts underpinning sex research and sex therapy.

About the Author
Tim Marsh was one of the team leaders of the original UK research into behavioural safety in the early 1990s and is a Chartered Psychologists and a Chartered Fellows of IOSH. He has worked with more than 400 organisations around the world since including the European Space Agency and the BBC. He now specialises in safety leadership and organisational culture assessment and change. Tim runs open courses on Behavioural Safety and Safety Culture for IOSH, was awarded a President’s Commendation in 2008 by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management and was selected to be their first ever ’Specialist Fellow’ in 2010. Spielhagen wuchs als Sohn eines Regierungsbeamten in Stralsund auf. 1847-51 studierte er in Berlin, Bonn und Greifswald Jura und Philologie, anschließend arbeitete er als Hauslehrer in Pommern, Schauspieler, Soldat, Lehrer an einer Leipziger Handelsschule, schließlich als Redakteur und Herausgeber (u.a. 1860-62 "Zeitung für Norddeutschland", 1878-84 "Westermanns illustrierte deutsche Monatshefte"). Als Autor der "Gartenlaube" wurde Spielhagen wohlhabend und einflußreich.

Gr 5-8-As the title suggests, this gripping historical drama tells of the danger Elizabeth Tudor faced on her way to the throne of England. The novel is not meant to portray Elizabeth's whole life; rather, set within a story frame of her coronation, the narrative relays the hardships, ill treatment, and tragedies that occurred between the death of King Henry VIII and the death of Elizabeth's half sister, Queen Mary. Because the story is told in first person, readers have a sense of being with Elizabeth and feeling the uncertainty, apprehension, and determination she feels. The author does not pull any punches when it comes to telling about Elizabeth's feelings for Tom Seymour, her religious convictions, or the bloodshed caused at the behest of Queen Mary. The political intrigue and changing alliances could be confusing, but a family tree at the front of the book helps readers keep most of the relatives straight. If only there were a chart of court advisors, foreign dignitaries, and servants! Reading Jane Yolen's The Queen's Own Fool (Philomel, 2000), about Elizabeth's cousin Mary, Queen of Scots, would be an interesting comparison/contrast study with this novel because both women faced similar types of opposition. There were people who cared for her, and she received both good counsel and a good education. But the broken pattern of her teenage relationships with adults (among them, her stepmother, Catherine; the flirtatious, duplicitous Thomas Seymour; and especially in this story, Catherine's Catholic half-sister, Queen Mary) forged an adult persona that was ruthless, canny, and entirely self-absorbed. For all its color, the fictionalized, first-person narrative, part of the Young Royals series, tells rather than shows the story, but the elements of Elizabeth's life remain irresistible. Good book!

In the historical fiction book Beware, Princess Elizabeth, by Carolyn Meyer, the theme is to persevere against all odds. This book takes place in the 1500's in London, England and the outskirts of London. The titular protagonist is a teenage Princess Elizabeth, who is a bit of a rebel, and the future queen of England. After her father, King Henry VIII dies, his last wife dies, and finally her half brother dies, the kingdom of England is left in the hands of Elizabeth's sister Mary. Mary is the daughter of King Henry's first wife, who hated Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, and therefore, hates Elizabeth. Under Mary's rule, Elizabeth is in constant danger, forced to convert to Catholicism, and is put under arrest in the Tower of London. After countless betrayals, repeated imprisonments, and being treated like a common peasant, she still ascends the throne, but not after a long and painful journey to get there.
While this book is aimed more towards girls, with its protagonist being a princess, it still has the adventure, beheadings, and various other elements that could make it appealing to boys as well. This is a really good book, and shows an insight to one of England's greatest monarch's days before she was queen. It also shows how little those of stature cared for each other. After her father's death, Elizabeth remembers the death of her father's fifth wife: "My mother was not the only wife my father sent to the Tower and then had put to death. I was eight years old when his fifth, Catherine Howard, was sentenced to die. All the nervous excitement of this latest execution could not be kept from me, and it was as if my own mother's execution were being repeated. I wept, I cried out, for days I could neither sleep nor eat. Kat, frantic to calm me, summoned the court physician to prescribe a sleeping drought. When I awoke it was over. I listened as servants whispered how Catherine Howard's head had been caught in a basket, her blood sopped up by crones with handkerchiefs, her body carried off for burial. The way it must have been for my mother, I thought, and I have thought of it many times since that day. Remembering Catherine Howard's death has always struck terror to my heart." (17-18.) This is an example of how ruthless the monarchs were at this point, and how even eight year old Elizabeth could be in danger. It also shows how empathetic Elizabeth is, even when thinking of the woman who faced the own doom as her own mother. This story is a lot like other stories of women in power at this time. Elizabeth is forced to persevere against the odds that she faces, and these odds are only increased by her gender. This book is a fantastic read for anyone who loves adventure and a bit of a history lesson at the same time.

Spies everywhere, potential poisoning, being sent to rot in the tower, a Queen who's sure not to put you on the throne as a sister; that's the life of Princess Elizabeth for you.
Taking place right after the death of King Henry VII Beware, Princess Elizabeth tells the tale of how Elizabeth, Princess of Wales, survived the rein of not only her brother, whom she loved dearly, but the infamous rein of her sister, Princess Mary Tudor. Told by Princess Elizabeth herself, she tells you of how she lived day to day life in the royal court and what she thinks of the dukes, earls, and princes whom King Philip II, Queen Mary's husband, tries to marry them off to her. Being as steadfast as Elizabeth is on not marrying, she refuses all proposals and lives in fear of what the King and Queen, especially the Queen, might say or do about her defiance.
Having every one she loves either dead or taken away by the order of the Queen, Elizabeth feels totally and utterly alone. How will she survive this horrible torture and still hope to become Queen of England? Find out in the wonderful book entitled Beware, Princess Elizabeth and enjoy!
My personal opinion of the book was that it was quite entertaining. I do admit that it did have some parts where it was a little long-winded but those parts were few. For the most part I gave the book 5 whole stars for its great development of the characters and making history come alive and enjoyable to read.

A fascinating portrayal of the young Princess Elizabeth.

As the daughter of King Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn, the wife he had executed on false charges of adultery simply because she did not birth him a son, the young Princess Elizabeth was at various times pampered, scorned, or simply ignored by her father. She and her young half-brother Edward, the heir to the throne, were close. But Elizabeth and her half-sister Mary - daughter of the woman Henry divorced to marry Anne Boleyn - were barely civil to each other. Mary hated Elizabeth simply for her mother's identity. When the King dies and Edward is crowned, the two sisters manage an uneasy peace - until Edward dies and Mary becomes Queen. Now Elizabeth is in grave danger. There are many reasons her sister could want her out of the way. Elizabeth will need all of her wits if she is to survive the dangers of her sister's reign so that someday she can become Queen of England. This was a fascinating portrait of Elizabeth as a teenager and young woman. I highly reccomend this book.

Basically A Preview for the Real Book

This is a sampling from 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs - A Road Cyclist's Guide to Britain's Hills. All the climbs covered in this book are from the UK. There is also a skills section on how to ride on cobblestones. While it didn't necessarily convince me to purchase the whole book, I did enjoy this excerpt(s). It was well formatted for the kindle with photos, graphs, and charts. The commentary and information was interesting.

This book is a "digital taster" for the author's more complete books:
100 Greatest Cycling Climbs of the Tour de France: A Cyclist's Guide to Riding the Mountains of the Tour
100 Greatest Cycling Climbs: A Road Cyclist's Guide to Britain's Hills
Hellingen: A Road Cyclist's Guide to Belgium's Greatest Cycling Climbs

I was somewhat disappointed, as I thought this booklet would actually include climbing techniques and tips. It does have a very few in one section, but it's mostly just excerpts from the other books. In other words, there's not much new material here. On the other hand, it's free.

The excerpts were interesting, and I guess that's the point of this little intro booklet. Besides the excerpts the booklet has four other, brief sections:

♦ The Hill Climber: Brief: Overview of greatest climbers
♦ The Hill Climb: Hill: Climb countdown
♦ Longest and Steepest: Discussion of hill climbs in the UK
♦ Riding the Cobbles: This is apparently the only section that actually has technique tips and suggestions.

The author clearly has a lot of experience in this field, but I think most readers will be disappointed in the skimpy content.

I like it, BUT I would like it more if ...

I like it, BUT I would like it more if this book would have information closer to my country. But it is great for those who can ride a bike in UK or another european country. Of course this is a demo book. THE BEST OF THIS BOOK is it describes the climbs in a cycling language and the biological aspects involved in climbing (but this part is too short, in my opinion). So, I think if you leave in european countries and are looking for a guide of those mythical climbs and a guide about how to conquer it, this is the book collection for you.
