The development of gesture and sign language in children is also examined in both hearing and deaf children, charting the emergence of gesture ("manual babbling"), its use as a prelinguistic communicative device, and its transformation into language-like systems in homesigners. Finally, theoretical linguistic accounts of the structure of sign languages are provided in chapters dealing with the analysis of referential shift, the structure of narrative, the analysis of tense and the structure of the verb phrase in American Sign Language. Taken together, the chapters in this volume present a comprehensive picture of sign language and gesture research from a group of international scholars who investigate a range of communicative systems from formal sign languages to the gesticulation that accompanies speech.

About the Author
Karen Emmorey received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1987. She is currently a senior staff scientist at the Salk Institute in the Laboratory for Cognitive Neuroscience. She has been awarded research grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Her work focuses on what sign languages can reveal about the nature of human language, cognition, and the brain. She has studied the processes involved in how deaf people produce and comprehend sign language and how these processes are represented in the brain. Her research interests also include the nature of spatial language in a signed language, the relation between language and cognition, and how language modality affects working memory.

Definitely makes you think what type of dad you are

An easy read by the well-respected founder of the National Fatherhood Initiative who is not afraid to be transparent with his own failures.
His book addresses 8 examples of fatherhood failures from the Bible, and adds contemporary introductions to make his point. Definitely a great guide to fathers. The 8 dads in the book include:
1-David: He was paralyzed by his past failures – includes author’s personal experience as a 19-year old
2-Laban: He made his children compete for his affection – the impact of John Mayer’s song “Daughters”
3-Jacob: He turned a blind eye to sibling rivalry – author’s family friends with 2 sons constantly arguing – and troubling consequences
4-Saul: He made it difficult for his children to honor him – Bernie Madoff (Ponzi scheme) and his sons
5-Abraham: He abandoned his child – fatherless “DC Beltway” sniper and the Norwegian killer Anders Breivik
6-Eli: He failed to discipline his children – Amy Winehouse’s relationship with her dad
7-Manoah: He failed to tame his child’s talents – X-men characters: Xavier vs. Magneto - talended for good or evil

Bad dads based on fathers in the Bible

Simple and easy read on bad dads with reference to bad fathers in the Bible and with some reference to bad dads of modern times, such as Bernie Madoff.

With each of the 8 mistakes, Roland ends the chapter with a good dad promise. Each chapter also has a refection section and a correction section for all dads to make the best of this book.

Very good read and straight to the point book. An essential for all dads! (and even mums too!)

Learning from the Mistakes of Others

Roland Warren writes to fathers an instructive guide to help them be better dads. Bad Dads of the Bible accesses examples of mistakes Biblical dads made that dads today can avoid. Warren expounds on David, Laban, Jacob, Saul, Abraham, Eli, Manoah and Lot to highlight significant shortcomings in their fathering.

Warren goes beyond the simple Biblical narrative of the what's, why's and who's. He relates the stories to contemporary life of fathers. He digs deeply into the Biblical story to gain insights for fathers, while he keeps it direct for readers to understand and apply the counsel. Warren shows that none of the bad dads intended to cause harm to their children; in fact, the dads are revealed as men who loved their sons and daughters. This indicates why it is important to study their mistakes. Even if we greatly love our children, we can still father them in a way that is detrimental to their spiritual maturity and general well being.

Through his own experiences of his father and as a father, Warren teaches readers to be better fathers. Warren has experience in business and in leading the National Fatherhood Initiative for a decade. His guidance to fathers is well informed by a variety of arenas. This book is interesting and helpful. Best of all--it can have a positive impact on fathers. Warren is an expert on the subject on fatherhood, and I think he has something to teach all readers. The book concludes with good actions for fathers to take with their children.

The tone and format of the book make it accessible for all levels of readers and appropriate for small group discussions. It is a worthy investment in our children's lives.

This charming little story illustrates through minimal text and fantastically stylized paintings the concepts Henry David Thoreau spent his life trying out. While Henry (the storybook Henry is a bear) collects flowers to press, strolls on stone walls, finds bird nests, and gathers blackberries, his friend toils and sweats to earn enough money for the train fare to Fitchburg.

With subtle nods at Thoreau and his real-life pals Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne (Henry's friend cleans out Mrs. Thoreau's chicken house, moves the bookcases in Mr. Emerson's study, and pulls weeds in Mr. Hawthorne's garden), D.B. Johnson cleverly introduces young readers to these important historical figures. No moralizing here, just a gentle, humorous look at the different paths each person may choose in life. Freelance illustrator Johnson models his striking debut on a passage from Walden, in which Thoreau advocates journeying on foot over buying a ticket to ride. Henry, a brown bear attired in a brick-red duster and wide-brimmed sun hat, is a kinder, gentler fellow than his cantankerous inspiration. His ursine friend, wearing town clothes and conspicuously toting a pocket watch, makes plans to meet him in Fitchburg, a town 30 miles distant. Spreads contrast the pair's respective travel strategies: on the left, Henry's friend does chores for unseen Mrs. Alcott, Mr. Hawthorne and Mr. Emerson to earn train fare; right-handed pages picture a leisurely Henry examining flora and fauna, admiring the view and excavating a honey tree as he strides toward his destination. At the end of the summer day, "His friend sat on the train in a tangle of people./ Henry ate his way through a blackberry patch." Johnson inventively demonstrates Thoreau's advice with kaleidoscopic illustrations in variegated colors and gently skewed perspectives that weigh fast-paced urban existence against an unmaterialistic life in the woods. Both bears make it to Fitchburg, but Henry's friend wears a blank stare, in contrast to Henry's bright-eyed, curious gaze. Johnson implies what money can and cannot buy, and encourages slowing down to experience nature. With graceful understatement, he presents some complicated ideas assuredly and accessibly. Ages 4-8.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-A nicely realized retelling of a short passage from Henry Thoreau's Walden. Henry and his friend decide to go to Fitchburg, a town 30 miles away. "I'll walk," says Henry, but his friend decides to work for the money for a train ticket and see who gets there first. Each subsequent spread marks their progress: "Henry's friend cleaned out Mrs. Thoreau's chicken house. 10 cents./Henry crossed a swamp and found a bird's nest in the grass. 12 miles to Fitchburg." The friend arrives first, barely. "'The train was faster,' he said." "I know," Henry smiled, "I stopped for blackberries." Johnson makes this philosophical musing accessible to children, who will recognize a structural parallel to "The Tortoise and the Hare." The author quotes Thoreau's original anecdote in his endnote. The two friends are depicted as 19th-century bears in the geometric, warm-toned, pencil-and-paint illustrations. Each picture is solidly composed, and although the perspectives may seem somewhat stiff and distracting up close, they work remarkably better from a short distance. The layout and steady pace, as well, make this suitable for storytime. The somewhat open-ended resolution could allow for classroom debate, and is also simply a good ending to a good story.

Marching to different drummers

There's a lot to love in this book by D. B. Johnson. There is the priceless story-lesson concerning two bears traveling to the same destination by widely divergent paths, one enjoying the pleasures of nature along the way while the other works to earn fare to travel by more modern means. There are the beautifully memorable illustrations, one after another, of the bears as they make their way to Fitchburg. And there is the message, to stop and smell the roses, take in a little nature, just walk. Or maybe just sit in the woods and read Thoreau.

A treasure trove of mind-challenging sights

GREAT FUN & yet very educational...understanding how the brain really works!

This is the second book on visual illusions by J Richard Block, the author, after his earlier book entitled 'Can You Believe Your Eyes'. Both are printed in large format. In fact, there is also a card deck which amplifies the earlier book.

Both books discussed the phenomena of human perception through hundreds of perplexing visual illusions & mind-bending eye tricks gathered from around the world.

The entire collection in the two books is definitely amazing and unique in some way.

The best learning experiences I got out of these two wonderful books are a greater understanding - & appreciation - of how the brain really works. I often use many of the visual illusions to demonstrate the principal operating principles of the brain, particularly the salient aspects of selective recognition and patterning. I have also found that some of them have been very useful in demonstrating cognitive traps & pattern interrupts, especially in the context of personal creativity.

Although the visual illusions are fun to play with, I find them very educational, just as what I have elaborated.

There is another type of visual illusions, known as random dot stereograms (some people call them 3D visual illusions), which are more fun but somewhat harder to play with. Nevertheless, they are also very educational, especially in understanding - & appreciating - how the brain really works!

There's more than one way of looking at things

This book is plenty of fun. It begins with images that can be seen in two ways depending on what you regard as the background. Next are multiple figures that share contours, where the background is not the key to the ambiguity. Then we have a short chapter where you see different figures depending on whether you look at the left-hand or right-hand part of the image. After that come some rather famous images that are composed of several smaller images.

The chapter I liked the best was about images that change into related images when you turn the book upside down. This includes four of the famous Gustav Verbeek "Muffaroo and Lovekins" cartoon strips (written in 1903 and 1904). And the book concludes with a variety of other illusions.

I was surprised that it is so easy to produce interesting illusions. But I don't want to take anything away from the artists: what they created shows terrific imagination and talent.

About the Author

Joseph D. Lichtenberg, M.D., is Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanaytic Inquiry, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and past President of the International Council for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology. He has authored and edited numerous books and articles, including Craft and Spirit: A Guide to the Exploratory Psychotherapies (Analytic Press, 2005) and, with Frank Lachmann and James Fosshage, A Sprit of Inquiry: Communication in Psychoanalysis (Analytic Press, 2002).

Frank M. Lachmann, Ph.D., is a founding faculty member of the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, Training and Supervising Analyst, Postgraduate Center for Mental Health, and Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He has contributed over 100 articles to the journal literature, and is author of Transforming Aggression (Aronson, 2000), and co-author of Self and Motivational Systems (Analytic Press, 1992), The Clinical Exchange (Analytic Press, 1996), and Infant Research and Adult Treatment (Analytic Press, 2002).

James L. Fosshage, Ph.D., is Cofounder, Board Director, and faculty member, National Institute for the Psychotherapies, NYC; founding faculty member, Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, NYC; and Clinical Professor of Psychology, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.
