A superb book incorporating a great deal of practical tips

This is a superb book which focuses on a much neglected area of primary and secondary prevention. Nonetheless, the book contains a great deal of practical tips for couple therapists irrispective of their theoretical approaches in the area. It is the first book which clearly assembled the most innovative contributors, not only in the area of prevention but also in the field of couple therapy from John Gottman and David Olson to Lori Gordon and Harville Hendrix. It is particularly refershing that the editors have chosen some of the most creative theoriticians, researchers and clinicians in the field. However, their contibution is particularly imporatant as they have also provided a brilliant compartive analysis between the different approaches as well as an interesting and challanging clinical case for which all contributors applied their strategies. Thus, the contributors have cleverly given us a "one-way mirror" in which to observe these prominent clinicians. Furthermore, they have supplied the most up-to-date research summary in the field. I find this book to be extermely helpful for me as a clinicain as well as for my graduate students and highly recommend it to all couple & family therapists.

Charming and creative. Maybe a bit misnamed...

An origami purist might object that these models are not true to the art form, because they are made up of multiple sheets of paper, and you will occasionally make cuts and use adhesive.

Purists can be tiresome, though. I salute the creativity on display in this book. Mr. Wang uses very clear diagrams and beautiful photographs to show how to build these neat models. Each one is made up of modules of one or more sheets of square paper. The sizes of each sheet are not set in stone, but the various modules require sheets of a standardized geometric progression. You have your "unit" sized sheets, then 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64 sized sheets, which are made by taking whatever your unit size sheet is, and progressively cutting into quarters. This is very convenient and easy to remember, and requires no measurement more involved than halving a dimension. You do end up using some non-standard sized sheets for smaller components like missle bodies, and cardboard is specified for prop blades, missile fins, etc. Mr. Wang shows how to make a number of standardized modules that are re-used in multple projects elswhere in the book. The models are, for the most part, very recognizable "caricatures" of the full sized plane.

This is a very charming and beautifully illustrated work. These would be really good projects to make for kids, or, if they're old enough to be trusted with an X-acto knife, great rainy day craft projects for them to take on.

Awesome modeling book

I have over 30 Origami books, with varying authors like Montroll, Brill, Lang, Yang. I've made many "purist" models (1 square, no cuts, no glue). This book is not a typical *purist* Origami book. There will be many sheets of paper, cutting, and gluing.

That being said, it's by far my favorite book (hardcover too!) for aircraft models, (and I have many of those too). All the aircraft in this book are models of REAL planes, no hokey fictional aircraft like Firewalker, Blue Raven or some other silly name the author decided to pull out of a hat, no, these are planes like the F-18, F-35, F-23, SU-27, F-14, Saab Viggen, F-15, E-2C, C-5 (really!) C-130, A-10, and even a P-47 Thunderbolt. When using a 8.5" x 11" paper, the models end up slightly larger than a 1/72 scale for the fighters, and about 1/100 for the cargo planes.

The models are extremely well detailed, albeit comically with the large canopies and enlarged nosecones. There's instructions for accessories like missiles, bombs, trailing edges, winglets, intakes and exhausts. The bombs and missiles alone will take about 60% of the work, as the pieces are very small and need to be glued together. You could of course, leave them out, but what's an F-16 without the wingtip missiles? Realism is what we're trying to achieve here.

All the plane parts are created with squares of scale size (1, 1/4, 1/16) that are folded from a variation of one fold (he calls them "kites") while making the models you'll have about 20-30 kites, all of varying sizes and slight differences to be glued together into a final product.

Keep in mind, its a "modeling" book and not a paper airplane book. None of them fly.

I kept looking for instructions to make a stand for the models he has illustrated but he doesn't seem to have one.

I would like to see a Volume II, as more aircraft would definitely be welcome. Planes like F-4, F-5, A-4 Skyhawk, A-7, A-6 Intruder, a few more centurion series like the F-100, and maybe even a WWII Volume. I'd definitely buy more of this type of book.

Good ideas, but lacks polish

Let me preface this review by saying that I'm currently halfway through the Kindle edition of this book, and I'd like to give you my thoughts thus far. The book succeeds in teaching you the fundamental ideas of how to build a solid, reusable framework for a game written in C++ using SDL 2.0. However, the book's code is riddled with bugs! Granted, most of them are simple syntax errors that can be easily fixed if you have some experience programming in C++ and know your way around a debugger, but recently I ran into a pretty major bug in the "Finite State Machine" chapter where, the way it's currently implemented, the program tries to access heap memory that has already been freed. I haven't yet found a simple fix for this, and I'm in the process of redesigning the way the FSM is implemented. In other words, if you simply copy + paste most of the book's code into your editor and compile it, it will not run! I also have a couple other minor gripes. His explanations of C++ concepts are pretty worthless; for example, he explains what the "::" scope resolution operator is about a quarter of the way into the book after using it in his code countless times up until that point. Also, the formatting in the Kindle edition is a bit wonky, but that's to be expected.

In summary, the book provides a good foundation for writing games with SDL, but the implementation of that foundation isn't quite there. HEED THE BOOK'S WARNING that it is NOT a beginner's guide to C++! BE FAMILIAR with data structures, polymorphism, inheritance, function overloading, pointers, callback functions, and debugging! I bought the book because SDL 2.0 is still relatively new and there aren't that many complete online tutorials available yet. If you have the patience, it might be better to wait for people such as Lazy Foo to finish their online SDL 2.0 tutorials. Otherwise, be prepared to sift through the bugs!

Not for a beginner; needed a competent technical reviewer.

First, this book is not for someone who is inexperienced. As other reviewers have pointed out, the code is riddled with bugs and/or incomplete when based solely on the text of the book. This is frustrating because he moves at a pace I could enjoy, but I end up spending more time fixing the code he presents in order to see how it works than I do learning how SDL works itself.

As a for instance, consider the code from Chapter 1. He walks you through how to do something, then redesigns it, then redesigns it again. The placement of global variables changes but there's no mention of it. Then there's the definition of Game.h with function bodies but never any mention to remove them when he creates the real functions a short bit later. All are very simple bugs that any technical reviewer would have caught, but they end up distracting you from the primary purpose of the book.

Last, but not least, let's not discard the entire conversation around the recent SDKs and how to fix SDL to compile with one instead of the DirectX SDK from June 2010. In short, if you are desiring to compile with the most recent Windows SDK (as DirectX as a separate concern has been retired by Microsoft) install the new SDK in its entirety and comment (or remove) the #include in DirectX.h. In _my_ version of SDL 2, this is line #35.

TL;DR: Not for a beginner (as noted), good pace, very sloppy code that distracts.

SDL 2.0 book

I'm currently half-way through the book, it's good for someone who's learnt at least all of the intermediate -> advanced fundamentals of C++.

However, throughout the book you'll find some mistakes (some minor, some can be seriously major) and things can get pretty complex pretty quickly without proper explanation. I'd recommend going through the book twice if you need a full understanding of how to create a pretty basic engine in SDL2.

The mistakes can become a little bit annoying and can slow down progress very quickly though. The very first mistake is inside a singleton for the texture handler, they neglected to show that you needed a private variable: static textureManager *s_pInstance; -you could have puzzled this out by yourself too.

EDIT:

I have now practically finished the book and I have removed a star. Why? Because I feel this book really bulks up on methods to learn then completely changes them as chapters go along (the states are a good example of this). You'll end up going through thinking this is the way to do things and then he suddenly switches over. I feel Shaun could have explained certain things a hell of a lot better (the state parser and why he put code together the way he did).

Grade 6 Up-Sidman's poetic observations of beloved pets interspersed with short essays by teens are sure to engage dog fanciers. The poems, mostly blank verse with a scattering of haiku, are rueful, contemplative, and sensory as they comment on canine behavior indoors and out and on interaction with humans, other dogs, and the natural world: "-and I am trying to understand this/ecstasy of stink that has me/retching but made you/dive and roll, eyes closed in bliss-." The occasional pieces by young people recount special characteristics of the canines in their lives, sometimes with almost painful honesty. The finding of an abandoned puppy makes a positive change in more than one family. Another teen writes about the enduring spirit of a dog living with cancer. Small black-and-white photos of the featured animals accompany most of the essays. Mindell's larger photographs facing the poems are often in soft focus. Sometimes the blur is poetically suggestive, and sometimes the indistinct image is confusing. Overall, though, the impressive variety of breeds is winning. Sidman sometimes gropes for fitting imagery, but the pacing and flow of her poetry are sure and her appreciation of her subject is astute. Many readers will chuckle or sigh in empathy, and some may well be inspired to express their own thoughts about the world of dog in writing or pictures.

Speaks to the Dog-Lover!

What does the world look like according to a dog? It's all about noses, squirrels, stink, sleep, and love. The dogs of our worlds are not only the ones we turn to when we need love, but they are also our sources for laughter, philosophy, and for helping us feel as though our own lives have meaning.
The poems and short essays in this book represent the feelings of dog lovers and dog owners of all ages; yet, it is the words of young writers in the form of reflective essays that add the unique perspective to this book.
Some highlights of the book include the advice poem, "Always Take a Dog," which reminds you how to have a better morning walk and "The Usual Spots," the title of which refers to the places in the home where the dog waits in the different seasons of the year.
What will strike the reader first is the beauty of the book-the cover is inviting (making it okay to judge this book by its cover), and the high gloss, cleanly designed pages make each poem appear unique unto itself. The photographs on each page--some clear, some blurred, all black and white--are beautiful representations of the emotions of the poem; they were taken by Doug Mindell in response to the writing.
Non-dog lovers may have a difficult time understanding the big deal given to moments like when a puppy nibbles on your toes, but the beautiful verse and descriptive word choice will not be unappreciated by anyone. Verses like, "I want to / gather you back / midair / that handful of puppy / you once were / keep you curled / in my palm," are sweet and sentimental, and they're sure to cause the reader to let out a little, "A[...]"

Very original collection

This book was incredibly eloquent. The poetry that Joyce Sidman wrote makes all of my fellow dog-lovers teary-eyed: the poems really capture the essence of the bond between a dog and its owner. The essays are also unique and heartfelt. They really contradict the common stereotype of shallow and immature teenagers. The photographs complement the writing in a simple and touching way. I reccommend this book to anyone!

New interpretations needed

In a field where new scholarship is not only recommended but needed, Hesseltine's Civil War Prisons- written seventy-five years ago- remains a standard on the topic. Hesseltine tackles the previous historiography of northern and southern prisons during the American Civil War. The author attempts to bring closure to the legendary northern myth that the Southern government did its best to "exterminate" Union prisoners by calling the effective northern war propaganda a wartime "psychosis." Furthermore, the author offers his analysis over the much debated prisoner exchange system, and comes down hard on the North, especially its government and General Ulysses S. Grant, for their questionable approach to this issue.

It almost appears as if Civil War Prisons comes from a Southern perspective with some northern sympathy. While Hesseltine accuses northerners of creating this wartime psychosis, and literally blames them for creating a public frenzy, no mention is recorded of how it was organized, why it occurred, and who was responsible for it. Additionally, the author leaves little criticism for the Southern mistreatment of Union prisoners, but does discuss the problems at Andersonville and other Confederate camps. In addition, the author dismisses the Southern notion that Confederate prisoners suffered the same or worst fate at Northern camps. However, though in no way a Southern apologist, Hesseltine's upbringing in Virginia remains filtered throughout the book as the author appears to have trouble "criticizing" the South.

The focal argument deals with the prisoner exchange system in which the author blames Lincoln and Grant for not exchanging prisoners of war during the last two years of the conflict. Hesseltine questions the motives of the two popular northern leaders-further arguing Hesseltine as a progressive historian similar to scholars of that genre- and labels them as hypocrites who wanted black soldiers as part of the cartel, but in reality only used that as a covering for limiting Southern manpower by not participating in this system. Even with the suffering of Union prisoners known by the administration, Hesseltine argues that this approach made it more appetizing to the public who could not fathom why Lincoln would not bring these prisoners home.

Obviously, more scholarship is needed in this area and new approaches could be attempted to reevaluate the black prisoner issue. Moreover, a look at the southern policies of this cartel would have balanced the argument. Also, the author does not discuss the treatment of African American prisoners in Southern camps for various reasons, and, therefore, questions can arise as to his motivations for this exemption. But to immediately chastise Hessletine as a southern sympathizer or one, who ignored the reasons for the no exchange, would be unfair. The author did not ignore the evidence or twist the material to a pro-southern meaning. He relied more on the dependable, but at times, overstated Official Records as the primary source for the book. In the 1930's, the evidence on Lincoln and Grant supported Hesseltine's argument that limiting Southern manpower took precedence over the exchange of black prisoners. Furthermore, a lack of personal papers, unpublished government sources, antebellum newspapers, and other material pardons Hessletine for not having every imaginable approach to this topic. Therefore, although Civil War Prisons remains outdated, it can be classified as an important and useful contribution to the topic of Civil War prisons and prisoners.

EXTREMELY GOOD BASIC WORK. Note that there is quite a lot of confussion amongst reviewers here on which book is being reviewed.

First we need to address the issue of just what work is being reviewed here and which book is being sold on this product page. As another reviewer here, Kerry Walters, has so well pointed out, several reviewers have mistaken this work edited by William B. Hesseltine, with a work actually written by Hesseltine around 1930 entitled "Civil War Prisons: A Study in War Psychology." The book being reviewed here is "Civil War Prisons," which is the small volume published and released by The Kent State University Press in 1962. We are addressing two quite different works. Hesseltine's original work, which as noted was issued about 1930 has its own set of problems; if problems you chose to call them, and issues completely separate than those addressed in this work. Readers do take note of this...it makes very big difference in how this book is approached. (Note: Hesseltine's 1930s work is good but, in my opinion, should be approached with caution. Hesseltine has tried his best to be neutral in his assessments, but this sympathies bleed through here and there and again, in my opinion, he does not give a completely balanced overview....but of course each reader should make up their own mind on this subject.)

This 124 page small volume relies heavily on first hand accounts of selected men who were actual prisoners during the time of the War and shortly after. The compiler has made a good effort in giving a good cross section of experiences, but of course the reader should note that these are stories of a few, attempting to tell the story of literally thousands and as such, the accounts recorded in this volume might quite well be rather myopic in some cases. Like any battle in any war, there are as many opinions of how the battle went as there were men involved...each has his own story and take on the situation.

The intention of this work was not meant to be a complete and comprehensive study of Civil War POWs, nor an all inclusive study of each of the infamous prisons involved. No, this is a collection of first hand accounts, enhanced by comments by each of the authors of each of the essays. Despite the notorious inaccuracies of many first-hand accounts, due to dimmed memories, the "war story syndrome," personal prejudices and the like, they are, from my personal likes and dislikes, my favorite. But that being said, the reader should take this into consideration when reading such material as this.

Since Hesseltine's 1930s work was published, and indeed since this volume was published, much research has been accomplished and we now have plethora of literature covering this subject with more being offered each year. This work in no way is the beginning and end of such studies but it is a great starting point for those unfamiliar with the subject. It is what I considered a "seed" work; one that should, when planted, encourage the interested reader to grow and seek out other, more in-depth studies on the subject.

I am giving this one five stars because I personally feel that it serves the function for which it is meant. It is a scholarly work but presented in a fashion which is highly readable and simply interesting and informative. It is a basic overview and a good beginning of a study of an aspect of our history which we should all be aware.

Thomas A. Markus is Emeritus Professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He is an architect who has worked as a designer, teacher and researcher on three continents.

It's about micro & macro-power within architecture

I'm 26 - a postgraduate student who's writing the thesis-design of architecture at Depart. of Postgraduate Arch. - Bandung Institute of Technlogy - Indonesia.
To tell the inside meaning of this book trully is to tell you about the concept of power of Foucault's. If you have interest in fields of philosophy, culture studies and architecture that related each other, this book can helpfully to explained how far architecture had infiltrated by the power, both power of institution or power of individuals. Like Edward T. Hall on 'The Hidden Dimension' this book explained the relation between individuals and institution within architecture more specific, it's mean how programmatic (function) and form (type or typology) had polluted by 'outsider-mission' of architecture we called power !
It can be more brighten your mind if you had the Foucault's 'Discipline and Punish - The birth of prison'. This book speak the same topic but the different are the medium. On Markus we can see how architecture polluted by 'the power' but on Foucault's we've told how 'the bodies' can be the object of power. And surprisely this Foucault's tell us how the power conquers the bodies from times to times even in Architecture of Prisons, Schools, Hospitals and Workshops ! Foucault's took the model of prison of Jeremy Bentham's PANOPTICON to explain the model of power wich implied to the bodies in every area of live and logos that he named PANOPTICISM, including within architecture !
Both Bentham's Panopticon or Foucault's Panopticism were talked about power within opposite perspective, and now we have Markus that has the same ideas to Foucault's thinking. Markus had juxtaposed the relation of power within every type of general-use building from the age of enlightenment within the text, diagram or figure that absolutely clear and enlight our knowledge and mind . It focused how programmatic being used by the power to guiding bodies to it's or his goals first by the sequences, and how the type of buildings 'bracketted' bodies in its or his (power) motive.
Finally, this books tell us how the inter-textuality within architecture that we can find power or social life's episteme inside. I use this book as main source of idea after Bentham's and Foucault's to write my design thesis on 'Architecture Without Frontier - A revisionary design to panopticism within architecture' wich still have writing/design 'till september 2002.
