About the Author
Dr Alan Waring has 35 years’ experience in risk management. He has been a full time risk management consultant since 1986. Typically working with boards, board risk committees, individual directors and senior executives, his assignments in many industry sectors on several continents have included governance-related corporate risk reviews for large organizations as well as a wide range of strategic and operational risk issues. His previous books include Managing Risk (1998), co-authored with Prof Ian Glendon, and Practical Systems Thinking (1996). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management.

About the Author
Wen-Shing Tseng, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. He was born in Taiwan in 1935 and was trained in psychiatry at the National Taiwan University of Taipei and later at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center of Harvard Medical School in Boston. He was a research fellow in culture and mental health at the East-West Center from 1970-1971, before he was recruited as a faculty member of the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, where he became a professor in 1976 and has served as training director for the psychiatric residency training program between 1975-1982. Dr. Tseng is a consultant to the World Health Organization and served as chairman of the Transcultural Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association for two terms from 1983-1993. He has edited, co-edited and authored over a dozen books dealing with psychiatry, psychotherapy, and cultural psychiatry.

Jon Streltzer, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine where he was a training director from 1982-1996. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is board certified in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and pain management. He has been Chair of the Chronic Pain Task Force of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and is a member of the Pain Medicine Board Examination Committee of the American Board of Anesthesiologists. He has been on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychiatry and Medicine and is a reviewer for several journals. Dr. Streltzer is widely published in the areas of psychosomatic medicine, pain, and cultural psychiatry.

Streltzer, is Professor in the Department of Psychaitry and Director of Psychiatric Residency Training at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine.

Tseng: Culture & Psychopathology

Unless I needed this for a class I would not have bought it because of the price. However, having it and reading it has created a different story and meaning.

This book is extremely useful in dealing with cross cultural issues and dynamics insofar as they deal with mental health issues, particularly with regard to diagnoses. The chapters are more or less in alignment with DSM categories. This makes it very easy if you have a client who presents with issues that are culturally driven. The way the book is organized makes it extremely helpful in applying DSM criteria to cultural phenomenology. Frankly, and although I am not extremely well read in the field of diagnostic criterion, I have read other texts and books on cross cultural dynamics and this is by far one of the best I have ever encountered.

As persons or practitioners we simply cannot afford to misinterpret a person as to their intent, which is easy if we rely solely on our own cultural experiences and biases. We need something like this book to make mental health diagnostics and even cultural understanding possible. Otherwise the dynamics can get very complex and pass right by us if we are not careful.

Personally, I think psychosis is psychosis no matter what culture you are in. But what drives a person to psychosis, for example, is going to be different in different cultures. Simply labeling them does very little good unless you need a code to get paid. Furthermore, not all cultures are like what we call American because even here it can vary greatly between states; and in some of our larger cities, even between neighborhoods. There are just certain things that are going to be avoided or passed over unless we have some sort of understanding that permits us to better comprehend the true nature of the dilemma that presents itself.

This book is to me one of those essential components that permits understanding by allowing for the development of a greater ability to help those in need.

The reading was excellant (never came across it before) and as to the content, the substance is like digging up old valuables which should be already among us peers.
The detail is just where it's wanted and explains itself through one colour, no confusion style. The theme is very real, as it is, and my human touch was with the Psychiatrists who conduct interviews and profile cases. It was a very meticulous project. The book provided an insight to the workings of the medical profession that basically deals with human relations.
It can possibly help my understanding of where I went wrong.
It details a general and broad concern over child rearing and society and from my experience possibly something in my teenage years overlooked. Life is not an easy thing for people to provide the wealth of happiness and as a referance to a myth of all having a bit of difficulty in communication, be that listening or communication.
I am not a doctor of any discription but I do have everybody's interests.
My mother is next in line for she is also concerned and she did attend a relevant course. Saying that, this book may not just be for the professionals. An invaluable read to me. I'll be looking for something similar along the lines of my "self mis-representation" and what I did not understand.

Modern psychotherapeutic practitioners are often hesitant to traverse the boundary between consulting room and church or temple, as the case may be. Delicate myths and beliefs are often at odds with the highly structured theoretical underpinnings of psychotherpay and psychoanalysis. Freud himself detested religion, although the rumor is that his loathing came from his experience of being hauled off as a child to Catholic Mass, which he found terrifying, by his nursemaid.
Consequently, many therapists avoid addressing, understanding or integrating patients' spiritual practices within the context of the therapy. Practitioners may feel that this space is sacred and ought not to be fair territory for therapy's examination. Also, a patient's spiritual beliefs may be at odds with therapeutic ideas. For example, an immigrant patient believes she is possessed by an evil spirit, in contrast to her therapist who may understand the possession as a psychotic episode.
In this book a variety of therapists explore the relationship between therapy,religion, and "soulfulness", coming to their own understanding of how these diverse mental orientations may not only exist together, but complement and enrich each other.
Especially provocative are Kevin Fateaux's exploration of creativity and soulfulness, and Joseph Bobrow's elegant and empathic treatise on the interplay of Zen Buddhism and psychotherapy. May all patients be blessed with such creative and fluid thinkers as the contributors of this book.

Review of Soul on the Couch

An excellent review of recent psychoanalytic thinking about religion and religious subjectivity, most of it coming from the object-relations schools of thought. The authors are uniformly creative and courageous in their thinking about the interface of spirituality. religion, and therapy. The only thing I dislike about this book is the over-reliance of certain authors on current "postmodern" psychoanalytic views and the thoughtless, trendy relativism that undergirds this worldview. (However, to be fair, this dislike is more a negative commentary on postmodern thinking than on the quality of the contents of this volume itself.)
