Mobile. Connected. Wired in. This is a generation that skips over perceived cultural boundaries and resists definition. They are a mash-up of identity, a blur of old categories and classes. Creators and consumers of a rapidly changing culture.
But how does one reach a demographic that is so difficult to pin down?
Many of the most popular approaches to youth ministry today begin by portraying youth as collections of fixed snapshots, “profiles” based on sociological research studies. Yet according to Dr. Jeff Keuss, today’s teens cannot be adequately characterized by these simplistic and static descriptions. Keuss argues that what is needed, instead, is a qualitative approach to describing young people, one that recognizes the “blurred” nature of today’s mobile youth culture.

Practical, Informative and Easy to Read

This book ventures into a realm that is unfamiliar to some, and seemingly impossible to understand for others. The majority of people do not understand and are unable to relate to the upcoming generation of youths. Albeit they may also not have the desire to, but for those who decide to press on towards comprehension of these apparently bizarre creatures called 'teenagers,' this book is for you.
Blur: A new paradigm for understanding you culture explores the different areas of culture that is of vital importance to youths today. Keuss systematically steps through mediums such as film, music, social media, and popular fiction in order to demonstrate the changes that have occurred in recent years. He also explains that there is not a definite formula or a point in which we can point to someone and say definitively 'they are never going to accept Christ.' These things are helpful, informative, and set this book apart from others I have seen as to what to do with the information that is presented.
To be fair, I don't believe this to be the best book ever written or to be the authority on youth culture. Honestly, I felt that Jeff Keuss liked his own creative titles a bit too much (he has the phrase 'blurring ____' on every chapter title, but in my mind fails to express what exactly he means by such a broad concept.) But regardless, Keuss undoubtedly presents solid, useful and practical information in this easy to read book.

Overall worth the read

In this book, Dr. Keuss communicates his ideas on how best to minister to youth who are engaged in a rapidly changing culture. He makes a case for the ability to experience God in culture through books, films and music, despite there location outside of our Christian subculture. His method of youth ministry, termed Sacred Mobility in the book, strives to created in the youth a sense of faith which stands apart from one specific culture, that it may thrive regardless of cultural location. He provides an example in missionary kids who, after growing up between two or more cultures, are able to develop a “third culture” which is able to move between them.
Dr. Keuss makes many points about youth ministry, not all of which I agree with, but should definitely be considered when it comes to dealing with youth and the culture they live in. The sources he pulls from, such as the NSRY, do seem a bit narrow to base an entire philosophy of ministry on. However, I do not think this invalidates his points. Dealing with culture is inevitable. It is imperative to understand as much as we can about it and how it relates to us and others. I would recommend this book for anyone who is willing to put some time and thought into it.

Good read

As Matthew 18:3 highlights the necessity of becoming like a child in regards to faith, Dr. Jeff Keuss emphasizes the importance of reaching the youth in today's ministry. He touches on many aspects of an adolescent's life including: technology, relationships, culture, faith, and media and how kids are effected by it! Overall, a good book to read in regards to youth ministry and how to relate and appeal to them. Keuss draws from a number of relevant sources, as well as referring to popular books, movies and artists of the current time period. Bringing in characters like Katniss from The Hunger Games, and Bella from Twilight, definitely made it relatable, at least to me, seeing as I have read or watched most of the books/ movies he referenced. It basically demonstrated that he does know how to reach younger generations. He also did a good job working in relevant biblical evidence. The only real complaint that I would have about this book is the overuse of the phrase "Sacredly mobile", not that it had any real effect on the quality of the book or the information presented, I just got weary of reading that particular set of words! But of course that is a tiny critique and I did enjoy reading Blur.
