A tale of beauty and pleasure

"Mistress Oriku: Stories from a Tokyo Teahouse" is simply a fantastic book. A pure pleasure to read, author Matsutaro Kawaguchi has opened a window to a time in Japan's past when delight in arts and culture were refined and simplified, and when a simple bowl of chazuke, green tea over rice topped with fresh clams, could be considered a work of art.

Almost in the Jane Austen style, "Mistress Oriku" tells the story of a women from the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters who was raised from being a brothel-owner's mistress to being the proprietor of an elegant teahouse, whose customers were the leading artists and actors of the day. She falls in and out of love, experiences struggles and floods, but maintains her composure and enjoys herself along the way, taking from life the pleasures that it has to offer without guilt or complaint. Oriku's story is not one of the pathos of a prostitute, and there is no moral condemnation or political lesson to be had. There is just the joy in things beautiful and sensual, be they the warmth of a human body or a steaming cup of heated sake.

Mixing fact with fiction, Kawaguchi has populated Oriku's teahouse with the greatest figures of kabuki, rakugo, gidayu chanting and other refined entertainments from the era. Although they will probably not be familiar to the reader, the depth of information lends a air of authenticity to the story. Like an Austen novel, it makes one want to go back to that half-fantasy time, and experience the love and sensation forever lost in the modern vulgar era. To help guide you, a glossary is included in the back of the book that gives the background on several of the figures that drift in and out of the story, both real and imaginary.

Royall Tyler's translation is flawless, as one has come to expect from him, and one can even sense the underlying Japanese phrases in his English. The rhythm and flavor of the language has been maintained, as has been the subtlety and beauty. His translation is as much a work of art as the novel itself.

The only slight complaint about "Mistress Oriku" is the ending. The entire book is one of beauty and pleasure, and only at the end does the harsh reality of the encroaching modern world rear its ugly head. While this may be honest historically, it represents a sharp departure from the tone of the rest of the novel, and seems to be included only because of the rule that Japanese novels are not allowed happy endings.

I loved this book - a window into a vanished world.

The book is wonderfully written and a delight to read, and one quickly comes to admire the heroine, Mistress Oriku. She has interesting adventures not only in romance, but in business, learning how to run a Teahouse, deal with her suppliers, cook and staff, and be discrete in the face of the frequent indiscretions of her customers. All the while being the mistress of her own destiny in a man's world.

I learned a great deal about the world of Japanese performers and entertainers - who frequent her teahouse - their obligations to teachers and families, the social distinctions, their senior students, and of course, their affairs.

Let me say that I am a Japanophile, have lived in Japan, and read many books about Japan.

Bohemian Life in the Meiji Era

I love this book and Mistress Oriku as well. A perusal of Misrress Oriku as well as much of Twentieth Century Japanese Literature of the period reveals that the lives of the Avant Garde artists of the Left Bank of the Sumidagawa make the Bohemians of the Left Bank of the Seine look like a convention of fogbound Baptist nymphs. Notice the preeminance of the high regard for art among these, the Japanese, the most completely aesthetic culture our human race has ever produced. Notice also the seductive charms of Mistress Oriku, utterly desirable as she ages into her forties and early fifties. Those who have had the privilege of knowing middle aged Japanese women, know that this is not a fantasy, but a simple reflection of reality. The ending of Mistress Oriku accurately describes the Japanese reaction to the death of the Emporer Meiji, their overwhelming sense that the times were-a-changing, and not for the better. The impermanance of all good things lies at the heart of the Japanese artistic sensibility that tracks back to the Heian Jidai, and the coming of Buddhism to the islands. This book is so good!

Sound financial principals whatever your personal beliefs....

So since this has somehow become a major point of contention for those who are rating the book poorly, I will start by saying I am NOT a conservative Christian. No, no, no, no, way. I am a Pro-Choice, Gay Rights, left-leaning dem and I liked this book. The principals behind this book are humanistically sensible! She is teaching you how to get at the root of why you spend like you do and then how to make a plan of action to STOP DOING IT! All while in the midst of the very exercise that at its conclusion can have easily saved you a $100 plus dollars in 21 days. For her the basis by which she does this is rooted in her faith and upbringing. For you or others reading it may be as simple as the need to get up from under the debt that is “oppressing” you. If you aren’t able to look to God for that direction and focus, would not the ability to stop and examine yourself still be of value for the period of just 21-days?

Of course the point of the book in its entirety is to read it and do the journaling exercises which again I, as a woman of faith ---though not the same as the author, personally had no issue with--- but if the mere appearance of the word God is a bridge too far for you then you will be missing out on the sound financial advice that is contained within these pages.

For Conservative Christians Only....

I was really looking forward to reading this book and following the 21 Day Financial Fast. I've followed Singletary's column in the Post for a long time and I have always really liked it. I was expecting the book to be similar to her column, which is why I was so surprised by the book. The advice in the book is completely based on conservative Christian values.

On Day 2 the focus is to identify which of the Ten Commandments you have broken that have left you broke.

Day 4 is an entire chapter devoted to tithing. And her advice in this chapter is where she lost me. Her advice on how to agree with your spouse on tithing (if one does not want to tithe and the other does), is that the wife should "submit to his leadship" and go with her husband's wishes. But for the opposite, if the wife wants to tithe and the husband does not, she says that the wife should "Make an appeal for tithing without becoming disrespectful of belligerent. Do what you can to make your case but don't go against his wishes. You could tithe off the amount of money allocated in your budget for your own personal use."

I really tried to stick with this book, even though from the start is was overwhelmingly Christian focused. I thought that I could separate out the biblical references and conservative ideology and apply the financial principles to my situation. But Singletary has mixed them together so thoroughly that it is clear she feels you can only be financially successful if you follow her belief system.

There should have been mention of these conservative Christian views in the description of the book. On the entire back cover description there is not a single mention of God or religion, which is particularly deceptive since there is not a single page in the whole book that does not have a bible verse or reference to "God given" money/wealth.

About the Author
Richard G. Erskine, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and licensed psychoanalyst. He is the Training Director of the Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy in New York City and conducts seminars, workshops and training programs in the United States and internationally. He is also a certified clinical transactional analyst and a licensed psychoanalyst who has specialized in psychoanalytic self-psychology and object-relations theory. Richard has developed Integrative Psychotherapy, a theory and set of methods that emphasizes affective, cognitive, behavioral and physiological integration. His books include 'Beyond Empathy: A Therapy of Contact-in-Relationship' (with Jan Moursund and Rebecca Trautmann), 'Integrative Psychotherapy: The Art and Science of Relationship' (with Jan Moursund), and 'Integrative Psychotherapy in Action'.

Janet P. Moursund PhD, is Associate Professor Emerita at the University of Oregon, where she served as Director of the DeBusk Counseling Center and as Acting Chair of the Counseling Psychology Program. She has published seven books in the fields of psychology and psychotherapy. Now retired, she enjoys teaching computer skills to seniors and auditing classes at the University of Oregon.

Beyond Empathy: A Therapy of Contact-in-Relationship.

The rare volume it is that serves as a clear exposition of the art and craft of psychotherapy. Beyond Empathy illuminates integrative psychotherapy, a theory and method of relational treatment, as useful for the seasoned practitioner as for the beginning therapist.
A basic premise of the authors is that psychological health and growth rest upon the foundation of the quality of our relationships. Bringing into awareness interruptions to contact within the self and with others is a main focus of treatment. Through the skillful use of inquiry, attunement and involvement, the integrative psychotherapist works to bring the client into full relational contact.
The authors identify and explain in depth eight relational needs: security, valuing, acceptance, mutuality, self-definition, making an impact, having the other initiate, expressing love. They posit that these needs are present in every relationship and, in fact, define a relationship. An integral part of the therapeutic framework is the valuing of the functions of the client's coping mechanisms and defenses. The authors believe that only through this valuing does the client become willing to let go of old patterns (fixed gestalten), that were once psychologically protective and now are maladaptive and anachronistic. Deepening the understanding of what other therapies may see as therapeutic impasse, the important concept of justaposition is explained; that is, progress may be slowed due to the marked contrast between what is provided in the therapeutic relationship and what was needed and longed for, but not provided in prior important relationships.
Beyond Empathy goes beyond theory to extrapolate a theory of methods. These methods serve to deepen the client's affective experience, enhancing heart-to-heart contact in relationship. This builds uppon Erskine & Moursund's prior work, Integrative Psychotherapy in Action (Gestalt Journal Press, 1998), which is organized primarily around a theory of therapy and provides extensive transcripts of live work. The live transcripts in this volume also include a detailed look at the therapists' interventions. They are good companion volumes.
Whether you plan to use this as a text or a reference book, it is an essential adddition to any clinician's library. It is the culmination of decades of clinical expertise, original thought, and synthesis of concepts drawn from the best traditions of theory and practice of psychotherapy. About the Author
Frank McLynn is a British journalist, historian, and biographer and the author of twenty-nine critically acclaimed books. His best-known works include biographies of Napoleon Bonapart, Robert Louis Stevenson, Carl Jung, Richard Francis Burton, and Henry Morton Stanley. His book The Jacobite Army in England was awarded the Cheltenham Prize for Literature in 1985, and he was short-listed for the 1989 McVitie's Prize for Scottish Writer of the Year in 1989. He is a graduate of Wadham College, Oxford, and London University, where he obtained his doctorate.

Solace and Wisdom When You Feel No One Understands

This book has been a great comfort to me during many moments of extreme loneliness and pain. Grieving can make you feel misunderstood, misplaced and lost -- and this author truly understands. Reading this compassionate book helped me realize that all of the extreme feelings one experiences while grieving are completely normal. The many written exercises in the book can be tough to work through, but they are healing. You could easily skip all the exercises and find comfort in reading the text alone. I also found this book very helpful in understanding and dealing with people who expect you to just "pick up the pieces" and get on with life right after the funeral. The book makes the point that Western society in general is guilty of encouraging those of us who mourn to cut our grieving process short. This book is perfect for the person grieving a loss, as a gift for a family member or friend who is grieving, or as a primer for those who are walking with someone through grief and would like some insight into the process and experience of grieving.

I learned about this book when I attended a hospice sponsored grief group

after the death of my father to cancer. This book combines good reading,

excellent guidance, and a way to do some journaling of thoughts.

I have given this book to family and friends who have lost loved ones to

cancer. It does make it easier to share feelings. A great tool in the

journey of grieving.

Espectacular libro, muy bueno, lo recomiendo si estas buscando tu identidad, si la estas reafirmando y lo mejor de todo se esclarecerá tu propósito en la vida. Lo voy a volver a leer, es un libro para leerlo dos y hasta tres veces.
