About the Author
Geboren am 24.2.1829 in Magdeburg; gestorben am 25.2.1911 in Berlin. Spielhagen wuchs als Sohn eines Regierungsbeamten in Stralsund auf. 1847-51 studierte er in Berlin, Bonn und Greifswald Jura und Philologie, anschließend arbeitete er als Hauslehrer in Pommern, Schauspieler, Soldat, Lehrer an einer Leipziger Handelsschule, schließlich als Redakteur und Herausgeber (u.a. 1860-62 "Zeitung für Norddeutschland", 1878-84 "Westermanns illustrierte deutsche Monatshefte"). Als Autor der "Gartenlaube" wurde Spielhagen wohlhabend und einflußreich.
