Is successful leadership measured simply by the outcomes a leader achieves, or is there another—more essential—yardstick for measuring success? In Redefining Leadership, author, pastor, and college president Joe Stowell shows us that the best leaders are driven by Christ-formed character, and that truly successful leadership is not defined by the standards of this world but by the counter-intuitive practices and perspectives of the Kingdom of Christ. With compelling personal stories and insights from the Bible, he highlights the contrast between these two radically different leadership styles and demonstrates that the teaching and example of King Jesus, the world’s most unlikely leader, is the only model of leadership that leads to maximum results, results that will have an eternal impact.

Review
'This book is powerful. It exposes the eternal consequences of having earthly applause for our Christian leadership and service, while receiving Heaven’s silence. And it is incredibly encouraging because it also reveals that leaders and ministries that seem to have earth’s silence may one day be the very ones who receive Heaven’s applause. After reading it, I re-examined my leadership, repented of my desire for “outcome,” and recommitted my “followership” to more clearly reflect our Servant King. Thank you, Joe Stowell.' -- Anne Graham Lotz, , Speaker and author of Wounded by God’s People
'My soul needed this book. Redefining Leadership offers the profound reminder that our legacy is formed by who we are, and not merely by what we accomplish.' -- Jeff Manion, , Senior Teaching Pastor, Ada Bible Church in Ada, Michigan, and author of The Land Between
'I am so grateful to God that my dear friend, Joe Stowell, has written Redefining Leadership. Not only is Joe a portrait of what he has written, but he has also spent much of his life and ministry shaping the next generation of Kingdom leaders. He writes not just from experience and what he has observed, but from a life and ministry marked by godly integrity. This book is a treasure and all who have been given the gift and privilege of influencing others. Thanks, Joe, for the clear, compelling reminder that we are to lead according to the ways of the Kingdom and the will of our King, Jesus Christ.' -- Dr. Crawford W. Loritts, Jr, , Author, speaker, radio host, and senior pastor of Fellowship Bible Church, Roswell, Georgia
'A revolutionary and life-shaping book on kingdom leadership, one rooted not in outcome-based theories about leadership but in theology---a kingdom-saturated and gospel-based theology where the leader is first a follower whose character is transformed by God’s grace. The revolution of this book is that God’s transformation of us makes us God’s kingdom leaders, and this is just the kind of leadership we need today. Five stars!' -- Scot McKnight, , Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary
'Joe knows leadership. And he knows what the Bible says about leading. He’s a guide worth following.' -- John Ortberg, , senior pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and author of Who Is This Man?

Overall this is a good book that provides an interesting discussion of leadership types
By JD
Overall this is a good book that provides an interesting discussion of leadership types, potential leadership flaws and traps, and advice on how to improve one's leadership abilities. If this is a topic of interest to you, then this is worth reading to get your mind started into the topic. The most valuable parts of the book are the author's examination of his own flaws and the efforts he went through to address them. However, much of the book operates on a false dilemma argument/fallacy, presenting only two sides or options as if they are the only possible categories. By Stacking all bad characteristics to one side of the argument while elevating the other leaves the reader with an either/or, instead of examining the positives and negatives found within the entire spectrum of possibilities. I would suggest reading this book, but do so keeping in mind that there is often a middle ground which is not being discussed.

A New Definition of Leadership
By Dr. David Steele
Leaders understand the true nature of the task before them. But true leadership must stowellbe redefined, according to Joseph Stowell. His newest book, Redefining Leadership seeks to draw leaders to a "character driven leadership experience that will produce maximum outcomes."
Stowell presents two distinctly different kinds of leaders: Outcome leaders and character-driven leaders. The former are referred to as "instinctive" leaders, the later - "kingdom" leaders. The author describes kingdom leadership which is "measured by the life of a leader who cuts a wide and impactful swath of positive influence." This is the kind of leader, in the final analysis, who makes a difference in God's kingdom.
The book is arranged in three parts:
Part I: A Redefined Priority
Outcome-driven leaders focus primarily end results while character driven leaders live exemplary, God-pleasing lives. Character-driven leaders "use their organization to build stellar people, who in turn build a thriving culture that produces maximum corporate outcomes to the fame and glory of God."
The author address potential pitfalls and "delusions" that character-driven leaders need to avoid. This brand of leader has his eyes fixated on the One who humbled himself and became a Servant to all, namely, Jesus Christ.
Part II: A Redefined Identity
Part 2 introduces the concept of "followership." The author maintains effective leaders "choose to identify themselves, first and foremost, as followers! Followers of Jesus." He adds, "Only when we have a firm grasp of our identity as a follower of Jesus are we equipped to effectively lead and influence others." Three qualities mark the leader who is committed to the notion of followership:
Follower-leaders count it an honor to follow Jesus.
Follow-leaders actively pursue Christ.
Follow-leaders are found in the "Way" with Him.
Part 2 proves to be the heart and soul of the book as the author spells out the importance of "moral authority" and the importance of humility in a growing leader who commits himself to the "Way" of Christ.
Part III: A Redefined Leader
The final section surveys the core competencies of a leader which is grounded in the kingdom priorities of Jesus. This leader relies on the strength that is granted through the indwelling Christ. Indeed, he is committed to the kingdom agenda that emerge in Matthew's gospel. Such a leader manifests qualities such as repentance, forgiveness, meekness, and mercy.
Redefining Leadership is a book which is totally unique. Few books devoted to the topic of Christian leadership are filled with the depth of wisdom found in these pages. Both young and seasoned Christian leaders would do well to pour over these pages and benefit from Dr. Stowell's wisdom.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review.

A Stellar And Essential Work On Servant Leadership
By Nathan Albright
[Note: This book was provided free of charge by BookLook/Zondervan Press in exchange for an honest review.]
This book deals with some of my own concerns that became a matter of importance once I started my studies in Engineering Management as a graduate student. Like the author of this book, I was struck by the immense gulf between the theories of servant leadership and related ideas (like Theory Y and Maslov’s ideas) that are popular in management schools and the pitiful and selfish practices that are present in the vast majority of businesses and institutions in our society, even those run by Christians (and, sad to say, often including churches) with rampant political behavior, self-seeking by selfish elites, and domineering behavior on the part of leaders. As someone with a deep identity as a Christian as well as a deep concern for the poor and needy (seeing as I spring from that ground myself) both nearby and far away, and also as a well-educated person, this gulf between theory and practice has long troubled me.
This is a book on leadership, full of self-effacing stories about the author’s more inglorious moments (which serve as tokens of his authenticity and willingness to admit imperfections and errors), numerous biblical references (and sound biblical exegesis), and containing a strong critique of our instinctual way of leadership, which in the Bible is viewed harshly as the way of the heathen/Gentiles. At its core, this is a book about contrasting the way that seems right and normal by people to lead, a way inspired by selfishness and following the example of Satan (which the author calls outcome-based leadership), and the leadership that is consistently advocated in the Bible and practiced by the godly, requiring self-reflection, humility, as well as wisdom and power from God that we do not possess on our own (which the author calls character-driven leadership). The title of the book gives the fundamental point to be found here, that godly leadership requires us to be followers of Jesus Christ and His way, leading through the influence of our example in all aspects of our lives, focused on serving the glory of God and showing love and mercy and respect to others who we happen to come across along the way.
Despite this very strong point, made with very powerful and uncompromising statements, the message is not rambling but is focused and well-organized. This is the sort of book that belongs as a textbook in leadership theory courses, as well as a frequently used resource for leaders to remind us what is most important, as well as what is not (namely, ourselves). At about 175 pages, this is not a book that takes a long time to read, but it is a book that rewards its readers by focusing on a thorough guide to godly leadership that starts with the goal of godly leadership (to raise up and encourage others as a follower of Christ), focuses on the priorities of leaders (long term, even multi-generational aims, service towards others, seeking the well-being of others), focuses on the identity of leaders as followers of God and as shepherds of Christ, and then focuses on the qualities of a redefined leader (such as seeking the Kingdom of God, being reliant on God and repentant for our own sins, meek and righteous through the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit, merciful and pure, and with redefined expectations that do not lead to discouragement and despair at the inevitable difficult times that we all face).
At its core, this is a book that seeks to distill the leadership wisdom of God’s word in such a way that it can be applied by godly leaders in the home, in congregations, in businesses, and in communities. It is a book that does not seek to pander to our desires to be seen as self-sufficient in our existing righteousness, but rather is a rebuke to complacency and a spur to greater love and compassion towards others, with some mentions of contemporary problems where people find a first or second chance difficult to attain (including immigrants and former prisoners, and those trapped under the burden of massive debt). This is a book written in such a way that its language ought to appeal to those who are familiar with the pious platitudes of leadership books but are looking for counsel that is grounded on the foundation of scripture and that gives practical advice on how to live the noble but seldom-followed ideals of the Sermon on the Mount. Those who take up the challenge of this book to practice what we preach will find much to appreciate and much to enjoy, even if it is not easy to change our entrenched habits and to learn to mistrust our human instincts and develop with the help of God better instincts learned through obedience to God’s ways and through the practice of love and mercy and transparent honesty with others. For those readers who do not find the language of the book too technical and full of management theory jargon, I wholeheartedly recommend this book in the hope that it may serve as an inspirational resource for others as well.
