An inimitably warm and stylish play that deftly mines the humanity to be found in the most unlikely of situations.
Tommy’s not a bad man, he’s getting by. Renting a run-down room in his uncle Maurice’s house, just about keeping his ex-wife and kids at arm’s length and rolling from one get-rich-quick scheme to the other with his pal Doc. Then one day he comes to the aid of Aimee, who’s not had it easy herself, struggling through life the only way she knows how.
Their past won’t let go easily. But together there’s a glimmer of hope they could make something more of their lives. Something extraordinary. Perhaps.
The Night Alive premiered at the Donmar Warehouse, London in June 2013, directed by Conor McPherson.

Simply amazing !
By BearMom
I first got to this play through an interview of Ciaran Hinds and Caoilfhionn Dunne talking about the play, which led me to more research (a Connor MrPherson interview on The Sound of The Night Alive - very interesting - and a video from the Daily Telegraph featuring an impeccable performance (the extract was way too short, unfortunately!) by Ciaran Hinds - accent and emotions absolutely spot-on, as usual.) and eventually, pushed me towards Amazon to BUY the play...and I wasn't disappointed one bit ! On the contrary : under a mundane surface, a delicate sense of purpose (or at least of "possible bright outcome") and a strong sense of Epiphany (oddly infused by the character of Doc, a sort of "wise fool" figure)hover and waltz with the ever-looming presence of the Absurd (madness, blind violence or even death). Fiendishly funny at times, deeply moving and strikingly real, the whole play has you hooked and turning every page as if you knew the characters personally ; Aimee (which could read as "Aimée", Beloved in French - coincidence ??), fragile and so damaged by her experiences she can barely believe in a greater good coming up for her, Doc, with his oddly meaningful words, sweet and amazingly sensitive and Tommy, so caring, so willing to make the right choices even if he doesn't know -like all of us - "what the f*ck is goin' on"... Watch out for patterns, read carefully and let yourself be carried next door to Ireland and away into the realm of Human experience.

More Irish
By Ron DiCostanzo
The play read as funnier, more "Irish," and the ending a bit less than ambiguous than the LA performance I saw. Both the performance and the text are first-rate - but reading the text filled out the performance.
