From internationally bestselling author Paullina Simons comes another compelling saga of heartbreak and redemption, and the devastating love story that led to The Bronze Horseman
Love was just the beginning of their journey
Gina and Harry gave up everything to be together. But they both want different things—from their marriage, from life, from each other . . . and from the shifting world around them.
Gina, independent, compassionate, and strong, desperately wants a family. Harry, idealistic and fiercely political, wants to create a better world, a better country. At a crossroads and at cross-purposes, they pursue their opposing dreams at great cost to themselves and those near to them. Through years of passion and turmoil they rail, rage, and break each other's hearts, only to come face-to-face with a stark final choice that will forever determine their destiny.
Their journey takes them through four decades and two continents, from extreme poverty to great wealth, from the wooden planks of the troubled immigrant town of Lawrence, Massachusetts, to the marble halls and secret doors of a mystical place called . . . Bellagrand.

From Booklist
The white Floridian mansion seems like a dream to Gina after years of struggling to scrape by. Her relief is palpable at the ease and luxury of life at Bellagrand, given to her husband by his mother, but equally evident is her feeling that this respite cannot last. Set before Simons’ The Bronze Horseman, the book dissects Gina’s fraught marriage at great length. An immigrant from Sicily, Gina finds that her goal of a better life clashes with the consequences of her husband’s communist ideals through the strikes, war, and disease of the early twentieth century. Although the simultaneous rise of the Soviet Union and crackdown on seditious comment in the U.S. are central to the story, other historical references at times seem shoehorned in. The plot, despite some eloquent moments, largely plods through more marital squabbles than one would care to count. The central characters are richly developed, and one gets to know them well over such an expanse of time. Whether that time is well spent will depend on the reader’s investment in the story. --Bridget Thoreson
Review
Praise for Tatiana and Alexander: 'This has everything a romance glutton could wish for: a bold, talented and dashing hero, a heart-stopping love affair ... It also has - thank goodness - a welcome sense of humour and discernible characters rather than ciphers' Victoria Moore, DAILY MAIL Praise for Tully: 'Pick up this book and prepare to have your emotions wrung so completely you'll be sobbing your heart out one minute and laughing through your tears the next... Read it and weep - literally' COMPANY

A brilliant read!
By Christine Benson
I started Bellagrand somewhat hesitantly after feeling that Children of Liberty was lacking, however I was not disappointed. Bellagrand tells the story of Alexander's parents, Harry & Gina (Jane) Barrington and the events that lead them to the Soviet Union. The story is well written in the same style as The Bronze Horseman and the rest of the series. I couldn't put it down!

The Bronze Horseman Series
By J. L. Thomas
I just loved the BH. All other Paullina Simons have been disappointing. I reckon they have not been written by the same author!! Anyway, when I heard Children of Liberty had a connection, I bought it. Found it boring, couldn't see any connection except "Barrington" so didn't even finish it! (unheard of for me!) Then I heard that Bellagrande was part of the saga so I bought that!! Again, could see no parallel and first 25% was awful....but I kept going. When I finally got the message that Gina and Harry were the parents of Alexander, I was hooked to find out about how they arrived in Russia, Alex's birth etc. I was disappointed in the ending a bit, but before I reread the BH to continue the story, I have gone back to Children of Liberty which now makes sense and I love It!! After reading that, I will read Bellagrande again before treating myself to yet another read (about 10X so far) of the Bronze Horseman, Bridge to Holy Cross and The Summer Garden which were brilliant books. By the way, has the 2nd book, Bridge to Holy Cross just been retitled as Tatiana and Alexander or is that another book????

The prequel to the Bronze Horseman
By Angela Watt
The Bronze Horseman si one of the best books I have ever read - I was enthralled with every word. So, when I heard there was a prequel, I snapped it up immediately. Not sure how I felt about this story - certainly not as rivetting and totally captivating as the story of Alexander and Tatiana - but the story did raise incredibly strong feelinds, just not all good ones. This is a powerful but terrible story that left me at the end with a great sense of despair. It certainly satisfied my desire to understand how young American Alexander Barrington became Alexander Belov the Russian - a story so terrible and so tragic that it was almost hard to believe people could behave the way Harry and Gina did....a powerful history of misplaced Communist idealism and of destructive yet incredibly powerful love.
