The #1 professional on Personality Disorders

Professionals in the fields of psychology or psychiatry are, without a doubt, familiar with the name of James Masterson, MD. He is the leading specialist on personality disorders and a leader in developing new approaches to effectively deal with problems inherent in these disorders. Specifically, this book focuses on the personality disorders as they develop in childhood and the question of whether therapy in the adolescent years could turn these disorders around and allow for normal, healthy development of personality. To date, psychiatric specialists have, more or less, refused to diagnose personality disorder in adolescents because of the idea that the personality is still in flux (developing) and so it is deemed impossible to apply a diagnosis in that state. Masterson calls this idea into question and provides documentation based on experience with patients that supports the new idea that therapy in adolescence can aid patients with disorders "turn around" their lives at an earlier point in life as opposed to a later time.
For the ordinary person who has been diagnosed with a personality disorder, or suspects that problems in life are related to a possible personality disorder, this book is interesting and may lead you to pursue therapy in order to allow you the chance for a real, enjoyable life. While the book provides insights into how the personality disorders develop, effective therapy is the only real way to deal with a disorder. In other words, this is not a "self-help" book. However, it is enlightening and may be a stimulus for your seeking a therapist with experience in the Masterson techniques.

Masterson had no clue...

Masterson's approach to Borderline Personality Disorder was tainted by the fact that the man was a narcissist himself. I purchased this book as a former victim... that is, patient of James Masterson hoping to gain some understanding or perhaps closure. For nearly two years as an adolescent in the mid-80's my treatment was overseen by Dr. Masterson. Twenty-five years later I was told I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from that treatment. This book makes it clear that Dr. Masterson's interest was purely scientific and that those under his treatment were nothing more than human lab rats. Perhaps his mistaken direction in the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder could be forgiven in the early days when there were no other viable options. However, Dr. Masterson continued with his unsuccessful and even damaging methods through his Masterson Institute up until his death, many years after Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy proved to be successful treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder. If you are searching for information about treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, I would suggest Marsha Linehan's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy of Borderline Personality Disorder or another current book focusing on CBT/DBT treatment. If your interest is in the history of mental health care in the "dark ages" you may find this book of interest.

Good, but there are better books

A number of years ago my therapist had me read this while he was treating me for BPD and it was a huge eye-opener; I have read it several times.
But now I see Masterson must have gotten his ideas from an almost forgotten psychoanalyst (to whom he gave no credit): Ronald Fairbairn.
Although Fairbairn's ideas are having a noticeable impact on modern psychoanalytic thought, his work was not edited and is obscure and confusing.
Thankfully, David P. Celani has written "Fairbairn's Object Relations Theory in the Clinical Setting" to rectify this. I like this book better.
But both of these books are from the perspective of an outside observer trying to look in.
Two excellent books written by recovering borderlines take you inside this world. One is "Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder" by Marsha Linehan, now preeminent in helping people others have given up on.
The other is "The Buddha and the Borderline" by Kiera Van Gelder.
I am not a therapist, just an adult struggling with BPD. In spite of the names, these last two books are easy to understand and have helped me a lot. They provide insight into my thinking and recovery strategies that have been developed since Masterson was practicing.
